Mark Laird is a historic landscape consultant and garden conservator and teaches landscape history at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University. Previous books include The Flowering of the Landscape Garden: English Pleasure Grounds, 1720–1800 and Mrs. Delany and Her Circle�(Yale).

It far exceeded my expectations. I bought two copies, one for myself and one as a gift for a colleague who is a horticulturist. She also was delighted, and revealed that she had always wanted to be a botanical artist, and this book has perhaps given her an incentive to fulfill that ambition, perhaps going back to school to do so. She had taken courses and excelled in them at Harvard's Arnold Arboretum. She is a brilliant young Irish woman who took her degree at Dublin University and knew and admired Mark Laird's writings. So that was a hit.
