Illuminating explanation of Hellenism and the Modern Jewish Dilemna

This book explains the effect of the present galut (exile) and how it affects Jewish identity. This book and Rabbi Kagan's newest book The Choice To Be (2012) are musts for one's library as is Rabbi Feldman's masterpiece The Juggler and The King.

From Transcendancy to the Material and Back

The Jewish Self is a masterpiece of original Jewish thought, rooted faithfully in the wisdom of the Jewish Sages. It explains the reasons, with references to the Sages’ works, for our distance from Spirit and all things Transcendent. Most important it points to the key, in our hands, to breaching the chasm between Sinai and modern man.
Jeremy Kagan, former philosophy student at Yale and now rabbi, has written The Jewish Self clearly and well. Any effort to digest his description of man's descent from transcendental heights and the possibility of his regaining what he has lost, can prove priceless. Rabbi Kagan shows how man can recover what seems beyond his grasp - the connection to Spirit. This is a wonderful book for the thinker and the Jew who wishes to grow.
