"This book addresses the topic of the general nonlinear integer programming (NLIP). The overall goal of the book is to bring the state of the art of the theoretical foundations and solution methods of NLIP to readers who are interested in optimization, operations research and computer science. This book investigates the theory and solution methodologies for the general NLIP and provides the developments of the last 30 years. It is assumed that readers are familiar with linear integer programming and the book thus focuses on the theory and solution methodologies of NLIP. The following are some of the features of the book: \roster \item"$\bullet$" Duality theory for NLIP: Investigation into the relationship of the duality gap and the perturbation function has lead to the development of nonlinear Lagrangian theory, thus establishing a methodology for the solution of the NLIP. \item"$\bullet$" Convergent Lagrangian and cutting plane methods for NLIP: Concepts like the objective level cuts, objective contour cuts or the domain cut reshapes the perturbation function. The Secret of Happiness--The Sermon on the Mount Revisited

The Secret of Happiness is a devotional exposition of the beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10) and a must-read for all Christians. Each chapter explains a beatitude, puts the beatitude in a spiritual context, and discusses why Christians should pay attention.
Graham's exposition is lucid and to the point. The book was first published in 1957 and it includes, at least in the first printing, a priceless portrat of Graham as a young man.
I have read this book twice. The first time was in college. I reading it again now in mid-career on the death of my grandfather. My grandfather loved this book enough that he donated a copy to the church library where it remained for 20 years. I receieved this book as an heirloom.

True Peace in All Circumstances

This is a spiritual guide to true inner happiness in any circumstance. In this day and age it's easy to become sad and have an empty, almost fearful feeling. Dr Graham, in this book, gives us all the tools and reminders we need of what is really imporant and that God offers to us an inner peace in all situations. This book is an excellent tool to regain the inner peace and happiness in all lifes situations. I highly recommend this book!

His approach is refreshing and easy to follow

I have bought all of Mantius's books on learning the piano and endorse each and every one. His approach is refreshing and easy to follow. He quickly becomes your virtual instructor and friend making the process of playing a piano or in my case a keyboard both fun and amazingly fast. As a new but senior student I was looking for a method that would achieve results rather painlessly after all I am no longer a twelve year old with a lifetime available for piano lessons. Also I live away from major metro centers so finding innovative instructors is more than challenging. Mantius is both supportive and clear with his lessons and you soon find yourself progressing before you know it. I absolutely endorse this book and the author. Keep in mind that he is a real playing musician so his insight is to be respected. All in all a great way to learn to play the piano.

Today I purchased my copy of an ebook published by a fellow St.lucian mr Mantius Cazaubon. This is a proud moment for me and it gives me great pleasure to support his work. If you ever want to learn to play the piano I urge you to get this ebook.. It's a good investment and I can't believe the price!!..
At first glance going through the first ten pages including the intro, it was an easy read.the ideas are flowing and keeps me wanting to quickly get to the next page .

Rshaid does an excellent job helping the reader envision how schools can move from a traditional, teacher-centered classroom where the instructor is the sole repository of knowledge to a new learning paradigm where students are motivated to acquire the skills they need to become lifelong learners. This shift from an emphasis on teaching to a laser-like focus on learning becomes the fundamental component of schools for the future. But, the author doesn't remain content with just telling us how to make this critical transition--rather, he shows us through a myriad of examples. This book is a must-read for teachers, instructional coaches, curriculum directors and parents who envision something better for their children.

About the Author

Jon Quigley has worked in a variety of capacities within new product development organizations, including embedded product development engineer, product engineer, test engineer, electrical and electronic systems engineering manager, electrical and electronic verification and test manager, and electrical and electronic process manager.

Jon is on Western Carolina University’s Master of Project Management Advisory Board and Forsyth Technical Community College’s Advisory Committee for the Project Management Program. Additionally, he has taught project management at technical schools, Seattle City University, and a number of businesses. He is also an expert at IT Metrics and Productivity Institute (www.itmpi.org), where he has webinars on a variety of topics.

Kim Robertson started his first company at the age of 18 and has extensive experience in all aspects of business and aerospace, spanning 40 years. He is the author of over 100 discipline-specific training packages, 3 fiction books, and articles for CM Trends and various other trade publications from industrial arts to configuration management and contract management. His interests in education and training development started in his teens. In 1972, The Godfather and Deep Throat were the two most popular films in the country. One, a major Hollywood studio production, the other an independently made "skin flick." At that moment, Jon Lewis asserts, the fate of the American film industry hung in the balance.

Spanning the 20th century, Hollywood v. Hard Core weaves a gripping tale of censorship and regulation. Since the industry's infancy, film producers and distributors have publicly regarded ratings codes as a necessary evil. Hollywood regulates itself, we have been told, to prevent the government from doing it for them. But Lewis argues that the studios self-regulate because they are convinced it is good for business, and that censorship codes and regulations are a crucial part of what binds the various competing agencies in the film business together.

Yet between 1968 and 1973 Hollywood films were faltering at the box office, and the major studios were in deep trouble. Hollywood's principal competition came from a body of independently produced and distributed films--from foreign art house film Last Tango in Paris to hard-core pornography like Behind the Green Door--that were at once disreputable and, for a moment at least, irresistible, even chic. In response, Hollywood imposed the industry-wide MPAA film rating system (the origins of the G, PG, and R designations we have today) that pushed sexually explicit films outside the mainstream, and a series of Supreme Court decisions all but outlawed the theatrical exhibition of hard core pornographic films. Together, these events allowed Hollywood to consolidate its iron grip over what films got made and where they were shown, thus saving it from financial ruin.

Lewis's chronicle of prominent skirmishes with the MPAA censors begins in the '50s (with The Moon Is Blue, Baby Doll and Tea and Sympathy) and continues into the '60s, when an X rating didn't necessarily indicate pornographic material (Midnight Cowboy, A Clockwork Orange, The Killing of Sister George), before moving into the present day (Eyes Wide Shut, Showgirls). The MPAA doesn't come off as an evil censor so much as a money-driven business concernDunlike Ted Turner, who apparently sabotaged the release of his own company's Crash and Bastard Out of Carolina because of his distaste for the projects. Although censorship guidelines have existed since the early days of film, their most organized form was developed in fairly modern times more to ensure substantial economic returns for the studios than to protect the public. Lewis (English, Oregon State Univ.) presents a well-researched history of the subject and analyzes the social, political, and financial motives that drive the ratings system. He discusses general film content, disputed scenes, definitions of pornography and obscenity, boundaries of compromise, artistic intent, among other topics. From the development of the industry and the blacklist days to the threat of independently produced hardcore films and recent market trends, the author studies court rulings, pivotal events, studio philosophies, and public figures ranging from Fatty Arbuckle to Richard Nixon. Lewis concludes that the industry's regulations grew from an astute evaluation of criteria relating to potential box office appeal and the necessity of maintaining overall control. Provocative Title, Thorough Study

Jon E. Lewis has written an interesting book in Hollywood v. Hard Core, although it does not entirely live up to or prove its subtitle, How the Struggle Over Censorship Created the Modern Film Industry, it often comes close. The climax of the book focuses on the battles of the late sixties and early seventies but its vision is much larger and encompasses film history from its origins until the battles at the beginning of this new millenium. He promises heroes and villains and he delivers them and even combines one person (Jack Valenti) in both roles, depending on who is talking about him, of course. The book is always fascinating as it ranges over the history of film and the author always makes the economics clear and central to the debate (something left to the side in most histories of film censorship.) Particularly interesting and illuminating is the section on the McCarthy period. A recommended read.

This is a great book on Kant's deontological ethics

This is a great book on Kant's deontological ethics; it is sectioned by topic thus making it an easy read and a book in which you don't have to read from start to finish, in order; one can pick subjects and dive on into Kant's ethics.

This is the best introduction to Kant's ethics.

I have used this book as a freshman-level text in my Introduction to Ethics course for years. Unlike many of Kant's books, this one is quite easy to read and understand. It is a translation of his students' notes taken from his lectures on ethics, so it is in the language of undergraduate students. (There is some minor debate as to its accuracy, since it is composed by his students, but I find nothing contrary to books witten by the master's own hand.)
This volume should not be read from the first page to the last. Rather, you should browse through it. The table of contents lists specific topics, such as sex, suicide, prayer, and rights. The novice will enjoy selecting topics of particular interest from that table. As one becomes more familiar with the easier issues of interest, the more challenging sections are less difficult. (The one drawback is the lack of an index.)
Everyone interested in any moral issue should carefully read this vital work in classical ethics.

KANT’S “PRE-CRITICAL” LECTURES TO STUDENTS ON VARIOUS ETHICAL SUBJECTS

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was a German philosopher who is perhaps the founder of "modern" philosophy, with his focus on epistemology (theory of knowledge); he wrote many books, such as Critique of Pure Reason, Critique of Practical Reason, Critique of Judgement, Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics, Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone, On History, Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime, etc.

These lectures---delivered probably in the 1775-1780 period, before he published the Critique of Pure Reason in 1781---are based on the notes taken by his students.

He states in the first lecture, “Philosophy is either theoretical or practical. The one concerns itself with knowledge, the other with the conduct of beings possessed of a free will. The one has Theory, the other Practice for its object---and it is the object which differentiates them. There is another distinction of philosophy into speculative and practical… the difference is not one of form, but of the object… The object of practical philosophy is conduct; that of theoretical cognition. Practical philosophy… is thus the philosophy which provides rules for the proper use of our freedom, irrespective of particular applications of it.” (Pg. 1-2)

He observes, “If… the reason why I ought not to lie were that God had forbidden it, because it pleased Him to do so, then it would follow that He might have refrained from forbidding it, had He so willed… I ought not to lie, not because God has forbidden it, but because lying is evil in itself. All morality rests on this, that we do what we do on account of the inner character of the act itself. Consequently what gives rise to morality is not the act, but the disposition from which its performance springs.” (Pg. 22)

He suggests, “To honour God is to obey His commandments with a willing heart, not to sing songs of praises to Him. An upright man who strives from an inner impulse to give expression to the moral law on account of the inner goodness of such action, who keeps God’s commandments with a willing heart, such a one honours God.” (Pg. 41)

He states, “It is not happiness, therefore, which is the chief ground of impulse to all duties; and accordingly, to try to make another happy against his will is to do him wrong. It is an act of violence to force another to be happy in one’s own way, though that is a pretext used, for example, by the upper classes in their dealings with their dependents.” (Pg. 51)

He argues, “The outstanding characteristic of natural religion is its simplicity. Its theology is such that the least intelligent among us can grasp it as completely as the most thoughtful and speculative… Religion and morality must go hand in hand. The philosophers of old did not appreciate this… The basis of religion must, therefore, be morality.” (Pg. 81) He adds, “Religion stands in no need of any speculative study of God.” (Pg. 82) And “Our entire conduct is religious if every one of our activities is accompanied by religion. Inner religion thus constitutes the whole of religion.” (Pg. 82)

He observes, “prayers are not to be regarded as a special way of serving God, but only as a means of awakening within us the spirit of devotion. We do not serve God with words, ceremonies and gestures; we serve Him only by actions which reflect our devotion to Him. Prayer trains us to act aright… We must divest it of all practical goodness to arrive at the purest concept of prayer, which is then seen to be good as a means. If, then, prayer has no higher value than that of a means to an end, it cannot be regarded as a peculiar service of God and intrinsically good.” (Pg. 100-101)

He says, “God has placed us on the stage of this world, provided us with all the materials for our welfare and with freedom to use them as we please, and everything depends on how men divide these benefits among themselves. Of this task men doubtless make a sorry mess. Let us then accept the benefits of life as we have received them, let us be satisfied with God’s universal wisdom and care and not allow misery and misfortune to weigh upon us.” (Pg. 145-146)

He explains, “Rights are determined in law. Now law indicates what actions are necessary from authority or compulsion, while ethics is concerned with actions necessitated by the inner obligation which springs from the rights of others in so far as they are not compulsory.” (Pg. 211)

He contends, “so far as animals are concerned, we have no direct duties. Animals are not self-conscious and are there merely as a means to an end. That end is man. We can ask, ‘Why do animals exist?’ But to ask, ‘Why does man exist?’ is a meaningless question. Our duties towards animals are merely indirect duties towards humanity.” (Pg. 239)

He concludes in the last lecture, “The ultimate destiny of the human race is the greatest moral perfection, provided that it is achieved through human freedom, whereby alone man is capable of the greatest happiness. God might have made men perfect and given to each his portion of happiness. But happiness would not then have been derived from the inner principle of the world, for the inner principle of the world is freedom.” (Pg. 252)

To those who know Kant primarily as a “heavyweight” philosophy of epistemology, these lectures may seem revelatory. They are certainly vastly illuminating for anyone studying Kant’s philosophy and its development.
