Really good book on iOS animations. I think the best for a wide range of practical animations. Marin is also great to follow on twitter. And he has a free monthly email with more animations. He obviously really cares about his work. I've been doing iOS work for years, but never did much with animation, and I have learned a lot.

Not razor-sharp, but still recommended...

In preparation for a webcast I'm giving this month, I'm working through the book Eclipse by Steve Holzner (O'Reilly). While not perfect, it's a good tool for learning about the package.

Chapter list: Essential Eclipse; Java Development; Testing and Debugging; Working in Teams; Building Eclipse Projects Using Ant; GUI Programming: From Applets to Swing; SWT: Buttons, Text, Labels, Lists, Layouts, and Events; SWT: Menus, Toolbars, Sliders, Trees, and Dialogs; Web Development; Developing Struts Applications with Eclipse; Developing a Plug-in: The Plug-in Development Environment, Manifests, and Extension Points; Developing a Plug-in: Creating Editors and Views; Eclipse 3.0; Index

For the person new to Eclipse, this will do a decent job in getting you started. Up through the Using Ant chapter, the focus is primarily on Eclipse. The examples deal with the package, and that seems to be the primary focus. After that, the style seems to change a bit. The GUI development chapters seem to focus a lot on GUI programming, and then after that's finished, they show you how to do it in Eclipse. Mind you, it's good information, but the focus has shifted. The plug-in chapter gets back to Eclipse as the primary focus again. While there are entire books dedicated to plug-in development, this chapter will get you comfortable with the idea and concepts.

So is the book perfect? No. I feel that the material could have been a bit more consistent as to what the foremost goal was... learning the Eclipse platform. But having said that, it still accomplishes the goal of teaching you how Eclipse works in different scenarios. I'd definitely recommend this as an initial Eclipse text for someone.

O'Reilly swings and misses with this one

I've used big time and expensive IDEs in my time, Together Control Center to name just one, and I was excited to finally get Eclipse and begin learning it. I always look for an O'Reilly book on a subject first because they are usually really good. This book, although good, misses the point of the title of the book. It should have been titled "Intro to Web Programming with an Introduction to Eclipse".

Another reviewer pointed out that the first three chapters covers how to use Eclipse. The rest concentrate on actually using Eclipse to do each chapter's small projects - GUI, Web, and plugins.

I was looking for a book that covered Eclipse in total, how to use it, the neat stuff, everything that Eclipse has to offer. This book doesn't even tell me how to makea bookmark in Eclipse. I saw that in the Eclipse Cookbook TOC at O'Reilly.

The 3.0 coverage is minimal. This book is not about 3.0. That is to be expected since software changes faster than authors can learn the new versions and write the words.

This is a good book if you want a very gentle intro to Eclipse, but don't look to become an Eclipse GURU from it.

a dissapointment

first of all the book i got (yes i checked the isbn)
was only 317 pages and was not subtitled,
"A Java Developer's Guide" but instead "Programming Java Applications".
There was less than 20 pages coverage of 3.0. very lightwieght.
I wouldn't say this was a book for programmers, but the equivalent of a user's manual for eclipse(eclipse made EZ, or eclipse for VB programmers).
The first two chapters(60 pages) is just telling you what the menu items do. Almost all the material in this book was covered in the Manning Eclipse in Action book. The exception being this book had 3 chapters(60 pages on gui and swt), and a chapter on struts. I only kept the book for that stuff.
I get the impression this is just a knock-off that book so that O'Reilly gets some of the beginner market...
Probably not worth your time if you have used eclipse for more than 10 days...

Erotic Mystery

I just read Paige Tyler's new book protective Custody.I suggest you read it early. I started it at night and was up till 2 AM
because I couldn't put it down. It has a little bit of many things, mystery, suspense, erotic spanking and hot sex.
I won't be a spoiler but there are some Red Herrings.

God how I love a good cop story. And this meets the mark. Inspector Gray Beckham is asked to protect his boss's daughter Paisley McCoy from a robber who turns out to be a murderer. He is upset to be babysitting and especially doesn't want to babysit a spoiled brat. She doesn't like cops and sees him as bossy and demanding. As expected, the sparks fly right off and Gray doesn't hesitate to give her some good old fashioned discipline to establish who is in charge in this relationship. However, the unexpected thing for both of them---they did not expect to be sexually attracted to each other.

The sex scenes are amazing and will have you squirming in your chair. The twists and turns in determining who-dunit is quite interesting. Just when you think you have guessed who the murderer is, the plot twists again.

I only wish the book was longer. But this book is worth the time and money, do yourself a favor and buy it.

Great romance!

Protective Custody is a great story featuring a club reporter Paisley McCoy and Inspector Gray Beckham. Gray is assigned to watch over Paisley after her office is broken into and her apartment is almost broken into. Turns out Paisley has a stalker and Gray is the perfect cop to keep Paisley protected and out of trouble.

I really enjoyed the story-line, the bit of mystery of who the stalker was, and of course the erotic scenes, especially the spanking one. I love Paige's writing style. Highly recommend!

MITonline offers the course based on this book for free. The course is great! This book is a less engaging, but a more comprehensive version of A.P. French's original text for the course. There are many gems in the book, such as insights into microwave oven fundamentals, that are not present in basic texts. Beware the softcover binding, it needs a gentle hand.

Very good textbook despite 40 years old

This book is some 40 years old. I, however, found it very instructive and enjoyable. It forms part of the Syllabus of the Lewin MIT 8.03 course. I now understand why. The book is clearly written. The book is filled with worked examples that are interesting and flow from the text. There is consistent explicit use of units and after examples are used they are put in context of the text,

The book covers: oscillations, waves, electromagnetic radiation, transmission of electromagnetic radiation, reflection, refraction, scattering, interaction of electromagnetic fields with matter, diffraction/interference and coherence. This journey is based on classical physics. The authors, however, are quick to point out the limitations of this approach but defend t he practice based on the reasonableness of the approximation for the scale of domain under consideration and the use of expectation values.

The color of the sky, why gold is yellow and silver shiny gray and the frequency dependence of a number of other phenomena as discussed. One example illustrated the tissue penetration of microwave energy into biological tissues. These were all delightful examples.

I am certain that I am completely ignorant of a number of limitations of this book. I also cannot hope to have deep insights into the necessity of quantum mechanics for the nanoscale understanding. However, the clarity and well organized nature of this 40 year old book has certainly diminished my ignorance in a constructive manner.

This is a excellent text for undergraduates in physics or EE to understand the fundamental electromagnetic properties of vibrations, waves and radiation. It supplements Purcell's very well. Having studied it, you are equipped with solid understanding and can go on into Optics.
