Complete collection of Tolkien's essays, including two on Beowulf, which span three decades beginning six years before The Hobbit to five years after The Lord of the Rings. The seven 'essays' by J.R.R. Tolkien assembled in this new paperback edition were with one exception delivered as general lectures on particular occasions; and while they mostly arose out of Tolkien's work in medieval literature, they are accessible to all. Two of them are concerned with Beowulf, including the well-known lecture whose title is taken for this book, and one with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, given in the University of Glasgow in 1953. Also included in this volume is the lecture English and Welsh; the Valedictory Address to the University of Oxford in 1959; and a paper on Invented Languages delivered in 1931, with exemplification from poems in the Elvish tongues. Most famous of all is On Fairy-Stories, a discussion of the nature of fairy-tales and fantasy, which gives insight into Tolkien's approach to the whole genre. The pieces in this collection cover a period of nearly thirty years, beginning six years before the publication of The Hobbit, with a unique 'academic' lecture on his invention (calling it A Secret Vice) and concluding with his farewell to professorship, five years after the publication of The Lord of the Rings.

Tolkien without hobbits

I recently bought and read Tolkien's translation of Beowulf, and found Tolkien's notes to the text wonderfully illuminating. When I saw this volume on offer, I really wanted to see what more he had to say... and was not in the least disappointed. The lectures/essays presented in this volume are centered on medieval literature (Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight), but in one case deals with "invented" languages and in another with fairy stories. I'm not a specialist on any of these topics, but I found the essays approachable, informative -- and thoroughly enjoyable.

This book has the essay that is the reason why we still read Beowulf, namely, Beowulf: The Monsters and Critics. That Old English poem was largely ignored by anyone other than specialists in the language until Tolkien explained to the world the wonders to be found therein. We who work with classic literature know this, but here's a chance for the fan who knows this author only through The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings to get to know the man as a scholar and to see the source for much of his famous works. Several other essays in this book give Tolkien's views on fantasy stories, showing his understanding of the genre and the foundation of his creative thinking.

At times, Tolkien expressed regret that he had become famous as a novelist rather than a scholar of language and culture--but these essays reveal that "Lord of the Rings" and his Anglo-Saxon Dictionary were two products of the same mental universe... and what a dazzling place it was.

Jeff Madura is Emeritus Professor of Finance at Florida Atlantic University. The recipient of multiple awards for excellence in teaching and research, Dr Madura has written several successful finance textbooks. His research on financial markets and institutions has been published in numerous journals, including Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis; Journal of Money, Credit and Banking; Financial Management; Journal of Financial Research; and Financial Review. Dr Madura has served as a consultant for international banks, securities firms and other multinational corporations. In addition, he is a former director of the Eastern Finance Association and a former director and president of the Southern Finance Association. He earned his BS and MA from Northern Illinois University and his DBA from Florida State University.

About the Author

Roy R. Robson is Professor of History and Director of the Honors Program at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. He teaches courses on modern Europe, Russia, and world religions. His interdisciplinary teaching includes “Intellectual Heritage: Time” and “Views of the Cosmos." Robson writes extensively on Russian history and world religions. His last book,  Solovki, won praise from the New Yorker, The Times (London), Condé Nast Traveler, and the Journal of Modern History. Robson serves as the series editor on Orthodox Christianity for Northern Illinois University Press. This year, the National Endowment for the Humanities honored the University’s Intellectual Heritage program by granting Dr. Robson a fellowship to expand his course on Time. Dr. Robson is president-elect of the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies, the largest regional association of Slavic scholars in America.

Kindle Edition needs some work

Amazon is proud of the Kindle edition of this book, and I have no idea why. They state:

Pop-out linked table-of-contents

This is a problem - on 7" tablets or a first-gen iPad, it is impossible to read without zooming and panning. I would like to read it on my laptop, as it says in the description that it is available for all platforms, but when I try it tells me it can only be read via a Kindle app on a mobile device.

Now that I see they've released a Kindle Fire app for PCs, I'll try that tonight and see if it's any better.

Breadth and Depth

Subtracting a star for the lack of insight on indigenous religions. It is harder to go in depth but can give better understanding into the development of religion. Perhaps this is for a different textbook. The other chapters have such depth, however, and it is sad for it to end, so to speak.

This "book" reminded me more of a magazine rather than a higher educational reference book. Although it did have a good bit of information in it, I don't like feeling as if my intelligence is being insulted and or the material being "dumbed-down" in order to appeal to the younger generation of college goers.

A lucid and eloquent examination of healthful breathing.

This book was a lucid and eloquent examination of healthful breathing techniques, and the benefits experienced from their use.
Very few authors are capable of expressing complex concepts in simple language, but this author does it well.
I originally found this author quoted at length in The Roots Of Consciousness by Jeffrey Mishlove, and decided to follow up. I am glad I did.
The book begins with reviewing the importance of breath to living things, and then on to the physiology of breathing. Then the different styles of breathing are examined, along with the benefits and detriments of each. The book then progresses to look at a much more healthful method of breathing, along with exercises making use of this new method. The benefits from the physiological to the mental, emotional, and finally spiritual realms are discussed.
It is a practical handbook, with a minimum symbolic expression, and a maximum of well thought out, simply expressed important information on an often underappreciated topic.

If you read and do the exercises in this book, amazing changes will result in your mind and body. These exercises are deceptive they don't seem impressive, any person, any child could do them, so it goes without saying most people will lose interest because it doesn't seem arcane enough. Those who do the work will be amazed by what results.

I picked up this book (1905 edition) as a martial artist hoping to help me with my KI breathing excerices. This book improved my breathing technique introduced me to yoga and eastern thought. "Science of Breath" provides a great balance between western theories and eastern ideas. This book would be a good aid to anyone in the martial arts or those who just study KI.

horrible editing ruined this book

Here's the good: the characters and story line, for the first couple of chapters, were intriguing and worth reading.

Here's the bad: the editing is AWFUL. I mean, terrible. Words missing in sentences. Using "this" instead of "that." Incorrect pronouns (like using "he" instead of "I"--very confusing!). Misplaced quotation marks. Incorrect use of "'s". Missing periods. Without even trying, I counted 11 mistakes in the first 2 chapters. After that, I couldn't deal with it any more and deleted the book.

If the book gets cleaned up, I suspect it could be worth 4 stars. Until then, it's unreadable.

This book would have been so much better

if not for the horrendous editing or lack thereof. I usually try to ignore the editing but this was so awful, not only was it a distraction, it made it really confusing to figure out what he was saying. At one point, half a chapter was repeated. I thought something was wrong with my Kindle. If the editing is ever cleaned up, the book deserves at least four stars but not in its current state.

Could use some editting

As other reviewers have said this books editing really needs some work. It has only a few typos that I can remembers off hand but there were quite a few missing words and the formatting was a mess in general.

Another reviewer mentioned that Caine talks about breasts a lot. This is fairly true. A good way to think of Caine is that he does not really have a filter, he does and says what he wants to for the most part. The vast majority of other characters in the book are women and seemingly all are attractive and all have something for the protag. If you are looking for deep and interesting characters you wont really get it here. The story is also fairly straightforward.

Sub par characters, bad editing and yet I still enjoyed the read. Caine is a fun guy to read. A lot of the comments about women get old after awhile as does his overall attitude but he has a brazen confidence or even cockiness that I enjoyed. I'm pretty sure ill pick up book 2 but don't hold me to that, the thoughts of how bad the editing could be in a new release kind of scares me to be honest.

About the Author

Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

Atomic Theory, the book it all started from.

In this book, Wells describes nuclear warfare and begins the descriptions of a possible future. He named uranium, "Carolinum" and talked about a chain reaction that would leave radiation behind so that nothing would survive afterwards, even if they did escape from the weapon itself. Dr. Szilard, the man who came up with the idea of splitting the atom with a nuetron, did so after reading, "The World Set Free". I say, NO KIDDING! Wells lays the idea right out in front of the world's face, laughing! It then goes on to describe future events that have occured, though in different times, and some which have yet to occur. He spoke of Carolinum (uranium), the atomic theory and its increadible source of power. He spoke of robotics and computers replacing people in the work place. This is where it all started folks. AND THIS IS JUST IN THE FIRST 100 PAGES! Trust me... it gets better :) If you wish yo know more on the theory and the bombs' construction, I refer you to Richard Rhodes. If you want to know the mind and the story that began this whole deal, read this book!!!!

A Man Ahead of His Time

H. G. Wells is not usually given enough credit for this particular book (in my opinion, his best). The focus is usually upon one of his other works such as The Time Machine. The World set Free is truly staggering in its scope, scale, and vision of the future. It is interesting to note how much Wells got correct about the future, and to see how much he did not. The fact that this book was written before World War I indicates his genius at seeing what might be possible and how this might come about. I cannot recommend this book more highly than by saying AN EXCELLENT, FASCINATING, GRIPPING PAGE-TURNER. A quick point about the original year of publication - if my memory is correct, it was originally published in 1910, rather than 1914.

The World Set Free (recently reissued as The Last War) is a 1914 science fiction novel by H. G. Wells. When atomic bombs are developed and the world is threatened with universal devastation, its leaders are forced to rethink war, government, and society.

The World Set Free is remarkably prophetic, as Wells forecasts both nuclear war and the capacity for mutually-assured destruction. And while Wells misses the mark on the way atomic bombs work (his atomic bombs have the same explosive power as conventional bombs, but they just keep on burning), he certainly doesn't underestimate their destructive power.

This book feels like a novel only in the sense that it relates a series of fictional events. What few individuals appear here are scarcely characters in the literary sense - other than Egbert, none are developed in the slightest. This simply wasn't what Wells is trying to do - Wells is interested in the technology and its ramifications, and because that's what he focuses on, The World Set Free reads like a fictional history book, or perhaps like an outline for a longer novel. This keeps it from ever getting too interesting, and while it's a short book, it can be hard to get through.

In short, The World Set Free is an impressively-imagined but not very well-written piece of prophetic science fiction.
