Book 2 in the series. Art Historian Nicolas Halstead never could have imagined a book Leonardo da Vinci created for his lover Salai existed, let alone lead to subtle declarations of love worked into da Vinci masterpieces. Nor did he picture himself a married man in a polyamorous relationship. Happy and content, lovers Nicolas, Ellie, and Luca embark on a quest to learn all they can about the greatest mind of the Renaissance. But their world takes a devastating and deadly turn that sends Nicolas into the seedy deviant underworld of Victorian London. It soon becomes clear that Conte Acario Bruno lives, and the madman wants far more than Leonardo’s book. He wants Nicolas dead and Luca for himself.

Rose Anderson delivers again!
By Jane Leopold Quinn
What a wonderful ending to this two part series of Loving Leonardo. Rose Anderson's writing palate is amazingly colorful. Every word, phrase, and sentence have specific meanings that embed a picture in your head as you read, and you are in the scene yourself.

The growing love between Nicolas Halstead and his wife Ellie is lovely, then add Luca Franco and you have a sensual, explosive, beautiful relationship. The reader is a full partner in their joy with each other. There's no doubt that their love will stand the test of time.

Secondary characters are realistic - people you can imagine knowing in your own life. The scenes of danger and suspense are well written and chilling.

This book and it's predecessor, Loving Leonardo, are so much more than erotic romance. They are learning experiences, art studies, history lessons, and most important of all - they are just darn good stories.

A series to go back and read every year!
By weavinggoddess
The love story between Ellie and Nick and Luca is just so lovely! Rose has made a second book and the characters she paints are very colorful and real. I found this a story that held my interest and I was sorry to come to last page! I truly hope to read more of their adventures. Thanks for a wonderful fun read Rose.

I loved Rose Andersons sequill to Loving Leonard. Both books are great reads. How she followed each charactor to each ones conclusion was masterful. It was a fun and exciting read and I couldn't put it down.

The Pleasures of the Damned: Selected Poems 1951-1993, by Charles Bukowski

To his legions of fans, Charles Bukowski was—and remains—the quintessential counterculture icon. A hard-drinking wild man of literature and a stubborn outsider to the poetry world, he wrote unflinchingly about booze, work, and women, in raw, street-tough poems whose truth has struck a chord with generations of readers.

Edited by John Martin, the legendary publisher of Black Sparrow Press and a close friend of Bukowski's, The Pleasures of the Damned is a selection of the best works from Bukowski's long poetic career, including the last of his never-before-collected poems. Celebrating the full range of the poet's extra-ordinary and surprising sensibility, and his uncompromising linguistic brilliance, these poems cover a rich lifetime of experiences and speak to Bukowski's "immense intelligence, the caring heart that saw through the sham of our pretenses and had pity on our human condition" (The New York Quarterly). The Pleasures of the Damned is an astonishing poetic treasure trove, essential reading for both longtime fans and those just discovering this unique and legendary American voice.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Bukowski's chatty free verse (and fiction) about disappointment, drunkenness, racetracks, flophouses, lust, sexual failure, poverty and late-life success amassed an enormous following by the time of his death at age 73 in 1994. Billed as the last book with new Bukowski poems in it, this hefty collection also culls from his prior books, and it is all of a piece: the warnings about lost potency, the ironic takes on ailments of mind and body, the comradeship with everyone down at the heels, down on his luck, or down to his last shot of booze. Bukowski's best poems have an exaggerated, B-movie black-and-white aura about them. One new poem warns that/ nothing is wasted:/ either that/ or/ it all is. In another, hell is only what we/ create,/ smoking these cigarettes,/ waiting here,/ wondering here. Near the front of the volume comes a page-and-a-half-long verse manifesto, a poem is a city, that might describe what Bukowski could do: a poem is a city filled with streets and sewers, it begins, filled with saints, heroes, beggars, madmen... banality and booze, and yet a poem is the world. Review
“This long and well-edited collection is likely to stand as the definitive volume of Bukowski’s poems.” (New York Times Book Review)

About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Freaking amazing! I'm not going to get all flowery and ...
By Lou Ann Stowell
Freaking amazing! I'm not going to get all flowery and sentimental because Bukowski I don't think would have appreciated it or thought it too trite expressing the elite-est "cuteness".

Bukowski wasn't cute or pretty in his writing...he wrote what he saw around him with an awake and aware in-the-moment presence that is reality. Reality is not pretty or kind. I love his writing for that.

Also I found the words to his dead love in the poems "for Jane: with all the Love I had, Which Was Not Enough:", "Notice", and "for Jane" more touching than anything I have read in a long time. The grief he felt was enormous, world wrecking and I identified with that grief since I lost my husband and soul mate two years ago. I cried on the evening train reading these poems and found myself saying aloud "He KNEW!"

No one that has lost such an integral part of themselves is able to express that sort of gut wrenching of a tribute without having truly loved and suffered greatly.

He made me laugh, think, gasp at the rawness of life I remember seeing living in the outskirts of San Francisco in the 70's. He took down a memory lane of my own childhood and re-examine myself in a way I haven't in a very, very long time.

I never met you, Chuck, but I feel like I knew you, I would buy you a drink at the races if I could. Thank you for being so brutishly honest and more clean in your observations about the world than 80% of the population.

Bukowski clean? Oh, yeah.

He stripped down things to what they actually are instead of what society likes to pretend them to be. That to me is a clean, healthy lungful of fresh air! He was vulgar in his language, but in case you haven't really stepped out of your cubicle or hide-y hole...the world IS vulgar, uncivilized and mean and a vast majority of us in the lower classes (which is damn near anyone under a million anymore) lives with that. We're your elderly on the pensions and social security, waitresses, garbage men, retail sales people, and secretaries. You know, the ones the upper classes can't live without because we are the professional maids and nannies and buttwipers making minimum wage to slightly over, but still in the poverty level that make their world go round. We see the unsanitized and unedited truth. Mother Nature is one cruel mother. Bukowski had the balls to say it!

Thank you again for your humanity and insight.

Simply, the most bone-jarring honesty you've read. Forget that it's been labeled 'poetry'.
By Jack Daye
Language warning!
However, if you like honest emotion, straightforward observations of the human condition that ring with truth, and you have sufficient maturity to acknowledge a certain amount of coarse verbiage sometimes expresses reality, this is, maybe, the only poetry book you'll ever want.
You'll laugh,
you'll cringe,
you'll be turned on and
turned off.
You'll see yourself,
and want to take a good, hot shower afterwards.

An incredible collection, but nowhere near definitive
By Tony Z
There's a lot of good in this book, but it misses some incredible poems. First of all, I'm really surprised that Some People didn't make it in... seeing as how it's easily one of Bukowski's most quoted poems. Same with Wandering in the Cage.

My first Bukowski poetry book was Betting on the Muse. It made me fall in love with the dude. But the choices here are pretty terrible. Avoiding Humanity, the secret, let not, a challenge to the dark, think of it are all essential Bukowski. The worst omission is easily "let it enfold you." It's a fantastic poem of Bukowski examining life and allowing himself to be happy with what he has. It's one of his all time best, and it's hard to justify not including it.

What Matters Most... has the most poems of any of his books, but most of the choices are just, eh. Lifedance is essential, icecream people is great, as is a vote for the gentle light and be alone. 25 poems from this book are here, and they didn't do a very good job of picking the best.

A few more that are absolutely essential: i met a genius, dreamlessly, splashing, hug the dark, downers, they are everywhere, alone with everybody, and it's a shame.

But most (definitely not all) of the poems in this book are fantastic. The last few written near the end of his life are pretty perfect. There are some hilarious ones (who needs it, a threat to my immortality), great political ones (American Flag shirt, putrefaction, commerce), and of course all the big ones (crunch, genius of the crowd, bluebird, etc).

It's a fantastic collection. But don't stop here. Don't even think about it.

so it wasn't a complete waste.
By Amazon Customer
I'm a B Class player. I haven't been studying chess too long, so I hoped to find a 1 stop shop of chess principles and maxims, even if they aren't explained in detail. I'd read some reviews that said that is exactly what this book has. Well this book has some, but very few are that helpful. Being generous, I'd say about 35% of the book is helpful and the remaining 65% is to fill pages. But still I did learn something, so it wasn't a complete waste.

Relevant Chess Tips
By Nimzo-Karpov
Soltis does it again! If you are interested in 250 relevant chess Tips & Insights, this is the book. The book reminds me of Jack Collins 1978 book, Maxims of Chess. Most topic areas of chess are covered, e.g., Attack, Calculation,Defense, etc. Take, for example, the topic STUDYING. One of the Tips is: "You only know you are improving when your opponents seems to be playing badly more often than before." Some of the Tips will be familiar, but many of them will be new. Each Tip is accompanied by a diagram and game fragment, one per page. The production quality is also excellent. Hightly recommended.

I am a USCF Expert, and own hundreds of chess books - this is one of my handful of favorites.

Why?

Firstly because the information is presented in bite-sized chunks. You can open the book to any page, and nibble on one idea. Again and again. That's how I learn. I've been playing for 25 years, and I still find ideas here that are new and interesting to me - for instance, that Q+N are so much preferable to Q+B - and why. Makes sense - and this complementarity is a powerful concept with many applications, even in life off the board.

And secondly, because this book, as with Silman's work, is at a level that I can understand and apply. The vast majority of IM and GM-produced work is way, way, above the needs of the typical class player. If you are rated 16, 17, 1800 ... face the facts: you need to work on a whole lot of basics before you will get much useful out of Watson or Dvoretsky. This book presents many of those basics in a fun and accessible way.

Great bathroom reader, too - deserves to be much better known than it is.

I Walked to Zion: True Stories of Young Pioneers on the Mormon Trail, by Susan Arrington Madsen

What did pioneer children do for fun? What did they fear as they crossed the plains? Susan Arrington Madsen, author of The Lord Needed a Prophet, has collected actual accounts of thirty young people (under the age of twenty) who were members of Mormon wagon trains and handcart companies. B.H. Roberts describes how he and his sister traveled from England as virtual orphans until they joined their mother in Utah. Fanny Fry tells of her fear when she was nearly crushed to death by a heavily loaded handcart.

Good stories, truly enlightening, but needs some editing
By Raspberry G.
I read "I Walked to Zion" with a lot of enthusiasm. The book contains many accounts written by young people in their own words. The reader gains a good understanding of what the trek from Illinois to Utah must have been like for children and young adults. Of course youth like to keep their accounts short so most details are missing. Especially missing are the hardships of the menfolk who did most of the physical labor of the trek.

Still the reader comes away with an appreciation for the difficulties of the children, and their victories as well. Many of these young folk carried siblings on their backs, cared for the cattle, walked in snow until they were numb, and some of them died of cholera, exposure and starvation.

As a Mormon living in modern times, it brought home to me a stark recognition of what my ancestors endured just to be with the saints who believed as they did. Living one's religion in peace was a luxury not afforded to the early saints, and this book takes a hard look at how that affected the youth of the church. Uprooted from their homes in England, Sweden, and other European countries, these children suffered weeks in the dark holds of ships. They emerged in America only to have to travel across its plains, a trek of nearly 1,200 miles, on foot in fair and foul weather. Many of them lost their parents, and gave up everything they had to be with the saints in Zion. I shall always be grateful for their sacrifices.

If there is one complaint I had with the book it is that it is very chopped-up. After each individual's story, there is a list of references. While I agree that references are critical, they should have been placed at the back of each book, with an indication of which stories drew from them. In this way, the book would have better continuity.

Still, I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone.

Review
Maintaining superb readability, the seventh edition adds key ingredients: more contemporary philosophy, impressive selections of primary sources, and excellent choices of additions within the chapters. There is much to commend in this newest edition. (Dominic Prianti, Gannon University)

The seventh edition of The Study of Philosophy is a great new version. In addition to offering a new chapter on contemporary moral problems, the authors have revised their work on logic, metaphysics, and the philosophy of religion. Lively and engaging, The Study of Philosophy should remain an important resource for every undergraduate. (William P. Haggerty, Gannon University)

The new edition of The Study of Philosophy retains the impressive coverage of topics of earlier editions—along with the excellent chapters on logic (including a superb treatment of the informal fallacies), and the student-friendly narrative—and adds many new, well-chosen topical readings, and a whole chapter on contemporary moral problems. The best introductory philosophy textbook on the market just got better! (Michael Latzer, Gannon University)
