Easy, but no Introduction

I have read Massumi's "Parables for the Virtual" (see my review), and so I was enlisted in the speed, vividness, direct address of the language of affects. So when I read this book, I was ready for what was to come. I felt right at home, and the book's more "casual" approach to these ideas made me feel that I was among colleagues.
But I don't know who this book will benefit, in the absence of reading the more considered texts of "Parables..." It has a "marketing" feel to it; that the book seeks to make these ideas more familiar; and yet if I come to these texts first, I might wonder just what kind of book am I reading. Is it psychology? Am I supposed to do something different because of what this book offers?
I really don't think these notions are ready for this kind of treatment yet. I think that they need more fermenting in the brew of Continental thinking (I am not sure how much of Deleuze's "univocity" and "virtuality," and "difference" is taken into account, for instance); I have always felt that the "pragmatic" orientation rushes too quickly to the "cash value" of an idea -- which I suspect might be in play here,
Still, Massumi's work, and that of his colleague Erin Manning (also interviewed in the book, but not listed as an author!!!), will help us along to a new outlook on just what is "real" after all, and just what it is that we need to learn to relate to and appreciation in one another, and the earth, if we are to sustain this endeavor of human aspiring. I say, it will help us move from the "deep" work of Deleuze and Derrida, but only after we have done that work, not as a substitute for it.
I'm with you Brian and Erin, but this book is a bit too breezy for what is at stake, in my estimation. But then I became a philosopher in the context of Hegel's Phenomenology and Logic -- so it is probably me that is behind the curve.

So topical and interesting I couldn't put it down.

I came across this book at a time when I was dealing with major changes in my organization. Since I was Vice President level, I had to sell my colleagues on many of the things I thought necessary for our survival all of which meant a change in process and thinking. I was a change agent. This book championed me through the steps required to meet the task. We did very well as we brought about a change in culture and in the way we would "do business".

In my opinion, this is the best book on process improvement on the market today. It takes up where so many other books fear to tread and deals with practical issues of organizational dynamics. An excellent companion volume to the CMM, SPICE, or other technical framework.

Recycled stuff from the author himself.

By all means I truly appreciate the author's great ideas of Lateral Thinking, Six Thinking Hats and so on. However, as somebody who had read most of his books, I am obliged to complain that this is quite a bad summary of his previous great work. For those who had not read any book of the author beforehand, this is marginally okay but I assure you still need to get back to his other books for practical details. For old fans like me, you will not be satisfied at all. To paraphrase, "To paraphrase William James one of the author's favorite philosopher's sayings, "You can describe something this way or that. In the end, what matters is the cash/practical value. pg20" In short, dont buy this book. Check his others. I hope my advice is not too late.

A great book when you are new to De Bono

I had heard about De Bono and lateral thinking but never read any of his books. I found this book to be so exciting because he gives an overall picture of his many ideas and they are all so relevant to today's world, I just kept nodding my head and saying "I agree". I can appreciate the opinions of two of the other reviewers, they are old fans of De Bono and have probably heard it all before. However De Bono needs to be continually searching for new converts and a book like this does just that. Sure, I shall need to refer to his earlier books for more detail but it is the broad sweep of ideas presented in this book that makes me want to learn more. So for anyone who would like to have some knowledge of what this man has contributed to thinking over about 40 years, buy this book, it is clear, concise, easy to read and reread, money well spent.

An architect and widely published scholar on the architecture, urbanism, and material culture of Mexico, Edward R. Burian is Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Following the author's previous book 'Modernity and the Architecture of Mexico', Edward Burian's newly released study of northern Mexico's past and current architecture positions the author as one of the preeminent experts of Mexican architecture. This dense and meticulously researched tome of hundreds of carefully selected buildings is an invaluable resource designed for a wide audience - including curious travelers, students, and those in related professional fields. The book's concluding chapter 'Lessons Learned and Opprtunities for the Architectural Cultural Region' is a particularly insightful assessment of the subject in respect to contemporary issues.

Remarkable survey of intensely neglected area

I love the frontier. I love it because I enjoy understanding what people can do with constraints, with scarce resources, and with hardship. Some truly remarkable art can emerge from the edge of things, and that's what you have here.

The books regarding northern Mexico in essentially ANY context are few and far between. That makes the depth and quality of this survey all the more important and interesting. This is no half-hearted attempt. This book surveys the architecture of the northern Mexican states with expertise.

The book is arranged as a narrative survey of buildings within the major towns within each state. There are all kinds of artistic devices to help you place these objects in your mind - maps, plans, and elevations. Even though the post-Independence period is emphasized, the author does not skip over important remaining colonial examples. Photographs are a mixture of modern and archival examples, and there isn't a photo for every structure. The most important examples include small black & white photographs with a few color plates inserted.

All this architectural loveliness is framed by introductory historical essays and an appendix of important biographies. If you have even a passing interest in the culture of northern Mexico, I can recommend the book to you as an excellent country and travel companion. Of course, if architecture is your business, and northern Mexico is a destination for you, this book is mandatory.
