This IS the Book on Home Energy Efficiency

In the home performance world this is called "the Krigger book." It is THE book to get for professionals, and it is often handed out in conjunction with BPI and HERS trainings. I refer to this book more than any other in our company's library. The 23 appendices are alone worth the price of the book.
Of all the books on home energy efficiency, this book does the best job of explaining building science in the sense of how residential buildings perform as energy systems. Anybody who thinks making a house more efficient is just a matter of slapping up some insulation up and handing out a few energy-saving light bulbs will have their eyes opened after reading this book. It has lots of useful drawings in addition to the clearly written text.
Important stuff in this book that are not in the "mental maps" of most homeowners and many contractors include: energy intensity indices (such as BTU/sq.ft./HDD-CDD), calculating heating loads, types of heat flow, defining the thermal boundary and air boundary, air leakage theory and testing (blower door usage), calculating natural air exchanges per hour (ACHn) from a blower door reading (CFM50), heating unit and distribution system efficiencies, non A/C cooling strategies, lighitng loads, light quality and efficient lighting, increasing water-use efficiencies, mechanical ventilation ("seal tight and ventilate right"), indoor moisture load-issues-management, combustion safety and indoor air quality, etc. As you can see, this may be a little too indepth for a homeowner. But anyone working in insulation and home energy performance should be familiar with these building science concepts. Get the book, get the right tools, and get good training!
With all the emphasis on and new funding for energy efficiency in 2009 and beyond, this is a book that should be on reference shelves for a lot of businesses and organizations. I had an extra copy from a training and I donated it to our local public library. I see that Krigger and Dorsi also have a more concise book for homeowners -- probably just as good.

A comprehensive introduction to residential energy use

"Residential Energy" is the best introductory book I have found on the sources, end uses, efficiency, conservation and analysis of residential energy. It is a comprehensive resource that provides an in-depth understanding of how the physics of energy influences the house as a system.

Because the book is targeted at consumers, students and tradespeople, it provides thorough coverage of theory, practical applications and construction details; in accurate yet easy to understand language, without assuming the reader has extensive knowledge of the subject. The book includes 315 pages, 350 drawings, 60 charts and tables, an extensive glossary, 23 appendices and a thorough index.

It is an appropriate workbook to accompany a high school, trades school or college course focusing on residential energy and would be especially relevant as a training manual for prospective residential energy auditors. Landlords, homeowners, renters, building inspectors, architects, engineers, carpenters, insulation contractors, HVAC technicians, plumbers and electricians all have something significant to gain by reading this manual.

If a person understands the principles, theories and tools described in this book, they have a very thorough general knowledge of single and multi-family residential energy sources, end uses, efficiency, conservation and analysis.

Nicely done book for beginning residential energy auditor at the coomunity college level. Updated with lots of additional info in the back. With the cost of energy becoming a current issue, this book covers it all. So, if you want to enter this emerging field, this book would be a helpful start.

I was very impressed with the book, from valuable content to how easy it was to read author's great insights of the start up evolution though the J curve. It really maps out well the steps that every Entrepreneur should know and understand to navigate the process of starting up and growing the business.
What I really appreciated about the book, is that author openly describes his experiences, struggles and victories as an entrepreneur and also gives advice from prospective of an angel investor. That gave me a better understanding of what each party in this eco-system needs and what each one gets out of the J curve steps. I wish I had this book to guide me when I embarked on launching my Interior Design business in 2008, as I didn't know there was a predictable pattern that all business go through and that I'm not an odd ball struggling thought the J curve.

Just to name few highlight areas of many; from understanding many types of personality and mix of strength and weaknesses that can be successful in starting / growing the business (even though popular media and articles list only certain mix of traits as desirable and required). Then the morph phase where he has highlighted that even most successful entrepreneurs didn't nail their business right away and had to significantly change the direction to get it right. Then it was great to understand clear outline of the distinction between "missionary" and "mercenary" types of CEO and founders since there is so much glorifying in media going on about mercenary types who are ruthlessly making money while sometimes not considering to leave this World as a better place (though that is changing with the new generations). I was always feeling that is a less desirable route in growing the business.
Overall, this book is so full of great advice that is easy to follow, and I know I will be going back to it to re-read it, as it is hard to find a good, and honest start up guidance that is easy to digest, and make sense of when you going through the steps of J curve.

The Start-up J Curve nails it!

I highly recommend this book for both first time and seasoned entrepreneurs. For first timers, it is an essential playbook that will save you considerable time and effort so you focus on the right activities. For seasoned entrepreneurs, it serves as a critical reminder that there are no short cuts before you scale even if you have done it before.
I cut my teeth on my first start up venture and reading each step of the J-Curve was like a lesson review of my start up journey. To a degree, I would say that I wish I read this book prior, but there is also something about the experience of going through the peaks and valleys of building a start up business that makes me appreciate The Startup J-Curve that much more.
While there are many “how to” books out there, few can directly connect the process of launching a start up with rich, personal accounts of what to do when things do not go accordingly as Love does. In many aspects, The Startup J-Curve feels autobiographical. Love takes you on his journey as a serial entrepreneur and is paying it forward by sharing a repeatable method for entrepreneurial success.

Must-Read for Entrepreneurs!

The Start-Up J Curve should be a must-read for anyone who is thinking about starting a small business, as well as long time entrepreneurs who are focused on innovation and continued growth. I started my small business in 2003, and really wish this book had been available at that point.

Reading this book helped me understand why certain things happened as my business evolved and I see now (as a result of this book) some things that could have been done differently that would have had a positive impact.

Even though I have now been in business for more than a decade, I feel like the information I learned from reading this book will help me and my company continue to grow and become more successful moving forward. And, it was great to see that my company is not the only one that ended up pretty far away from its original business plan - and that there is a good reason why that happens.

It is wonderful to have access to expert advice from someone like Howard Love, as his perspective is really unique. He has had the experience of working through the start up process for his own companies, as well as in the position of being an investor. He is able to provide insights that someone who hadn’t seen all sizes of the startup process – and what happens afterwards – would not be able to do.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about entrepreneurship. It would be ideal to read it before starting your business, then re-reading it or referring back to it along the way, particularly when you are feeling frustrated with how things or going or experiencing a decline or growing pains.

I know time is always a concern for busy small business owners, but the time you spend reading this book is definitely time well spent. I suggest considering it professional development/training. It is an easy read. It is written in a very conversational tone so it goes quickly and is easy to understood. I read it from cover to cover in about 4 hours on an airplane.

A lot of information at a great price; I suggest a hard copy because you'll want to flip through it quickly

If you have ever worked with Python, you have probably come across Python Module of the Week (PyMOTW) or virtualenvwrapper. Both are the work of Doug Hellmann. He has now brought to life The Python Standard Library By Example. If Python gives you the batteries, Hellmann gives you not only an instruction manual but the "on" switch to get you going right away.

The Python documentation is really great, but might leave some with a "some assembly required" feeling. The book's examples aim to be more complete, while still covering a serious breadth of the Standard Library. Do not expect to use all of the examples in your project without some modification, customization and expansion. After all, they are miniature projects in their own right.

By the Numbers:

It weighs in at a whopping 1300-something pages across 19 chapters. This translates roughly to a 2-inch print copy, or a 7.3 MB PDF. The accompanying source is 5.5 MB after unzipping and contains 113 example modules. The examples were tested with Python 2.7. Some of the examples would port to Python 3 easily, others not so much. Even before reading it, I was pretty impressed and somewhat reluctant. Some of those numbers might not be very meaningful as far as the book's usefulness, but it should give you a sense of how much material is covered. In my opinion, you get a lot for the price.

What I Thought:

I use Python as my primary language and I admit that I had never heard of some of the modules covered (e.g. anydbm, asyncchat, pyclbr, just to name a few). Not only that, the modules which I had previously used were probably in the minority and smaller still are the modules which I use regularly. This is in part due to changes made in Python 2.7 that I have not absorbed, but also because there are plenty of places for cool features to hide out if you are not looking for them. I can say that after being exposed to the material, I have a better understanding of some of the most common modules and have added a few others to my arsenal.

I would recommend this book to any serious Python programmer who wants to get the most of what Python has to offer. If you are just starting with Python, but comfortable with another language, you might pick up quite a bit from just a quick skim of everything. You can then drill down into the parts which seem most applicable or interesting. However, if you are new to programming, this is probably not the book for you (as mentioned in the book's Introduction, and several other reviews I found).

I received an electronic review copy from the publisher in exchange for my review. The past two or three days my home internet has been down. This book was great to have around in a time of crisis. But due to the nature of the material I think I would personally make more use of it as a hard copy. I admit to not reading it cover to cover, but I cannot imagine anyone wanting to do so. That said, it is definitely a great addition to my library.

Shows how the tinkertoys fit together

I have kept one star in reserve, and only awarded four, because of two limitations of this vast reference work.

First, it is not quite as complete as the title would claim; the recent "email" module, for example, gets no coverage at all, and at a few other spots its tour of particular features seemed rather cursory.

Second, it lacks a strong editorial voice; the short paragraphs that tie together the working examples that make up most of the volume's bulk rarely give the reader any canny knowledge about which libraries to use, which ones to avoid, and which have been supplanted by better third-party offerings. This kind of advice would really increase the value of the book to newer programmers, who often do not know which parts of the ecosystem to avoid -- for example, it would be great if a future edition said, "try looking at Tornado or Twisted Python if you ever get the temptation to try out the asyncore module!" Instead, the book provides its usual deadpan introduction to the module followed by increasingly interesting examples, never pausing to note that the library is old, un-Pythonic, and abandoned.

But with these two limitations noted, the work remains the best reference to the Standard Library in print. Too often, the official documentation takes the form of a pile of unassembled tinkertoys scattered across the floor -- and is of little help to a programmer who does not already know which three working pieces are all that is needed to get a working example. This book, by contrast, performs the actual assembly: each library is used to build a series of programs that perform a wide range of common tasks. This is exactly what most programmers need in order to get started with an unfamiliar API.

useful contribution to python literature

While most python books teach you how to write code in the language, this book takes a different approach - it shows you how to build python programs using existing code from the standard library. As every python programmer knows, the best way to leverage the power of the language is to use the built-in functionality of the library.

True to its title, the book features numerous examples, each one fully annotated, explaining how to use the modules.

Need to parse text using regular expressions? Python has a module for that. What about searching file system directories recursively? Network sockets? Those and hundreds of other useful tools are available in the standard library. Hellman shows you how to use the existing modules in the library so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

A word of caution for those who are new to python: the book assumes familiarity with basic language syntax.

Overall, this book compares favorably with the other python texts I have read. What makes Hellman's book exceptional is that it concentrates on an important area of the language that has been relatively unexplored by most of the python tutorial literature. Other excellent python books include Mark Lutz, "Programming Python," and David Beazley, "Python Essential Reference."

I have no idea what the appeal of J. Deveraux books are...I just don't get them.

I've tried to read several of Jude Deveraux's books with no success. I thought maybe if I picked a current title, I'd find something I'd like. But no luck with this bizarre story. I managed to get to chapter two, but could not suspend disbelief any longer.

The heroine is TSTL...too stupid to live. She's not believable at all, at least the way she's written. Maybe in the hands of a more capable author, but not Ms. Deveraux. The girl falls into an arranged marriage, but when she learns the true reason behind the arrangement, she bolts from the house...dressed in nothing but her nightgown, because her uncle said she couldn't leave in any of the clothes he bought her. Really? Seriously? There's not a shred of clothing in the house she could steal? Even a coat from the hall? And truth be told, I'm pretty sure he bought her the nightgown, meaning she should have ripped that off and left the house completely naked.

But no...she needs to be half naked to fall into the arms of the big American (because all Americans are big) after being pursued by several unsavory Brits. So...after being chased, grabbed at by men who have obviously nothing good in mind, the instant she meets the hero...literally runs into him...and feels safe. Again, really? You're being chased by men, you're in a torn nightgown, and the next man you meet you fall into his arms and let him carry you away to his room (even he finds it puzzling a few pages later...after he relieves her of her virginity in what has to be the strangest sex scene ever). From there the girl's reactions jump from fear to anger to arrogance to lust in about three paragraphs. And then this book became a wall-banger for me. As in I threw the book against the wall. And got a refund.

There's also problems with the writing. There's a term for changing from one character's point of view to another within the same scene. It's called head-hopping, and from my POV it's a rookie writing mistake. I understand Ms. Devereax has written quite a few books, but I'm wondering why an editor or three hasn't pointed out that shifting points of view are annoying, distracting, and not really in fashion any longer. And it's not that hard to stick to one POV per scene. There are many, many writers who've mastered the technique, who manage to tell a story without jumping around from character to character.

I'm sure this review will label me a hater, as Ms. D. is so eager to label anyone who doesn't like her books, or disagrees with her Facebook posts. In her opinion, the haters always win. I'm not a hater though; I'm a disappointed customer who bought a book they did not like. I have no emotional interest in this other than frustration at reading a book that could be so much better. Maybe it's the strain of cranking out books at such a rapid pace that makes the writing not so good. I dunno. All I do know is this book is not for me.

Good Reading

When a young girl finds out her uncle and husband-to-be have schemed to marry her and get her money she runs away and learns what life is about. Her runs takes her to an English harbor where she is abducted and installed on a boat headed for America by a wealthy, she ends up married to him but an old girlfriend interferes and the really story begins. This is a good story for love, growing up and in the end happiness.

I have been reading Jude Deveraux for many years, and I have a lot of books by many authors. Jude's books have become my favorites because of her humor and wit; I have actually laughed out loud. What I really enjoy about her books is the fact that she uses the same families through so many of her stories, and being a genealogist in my own right, these stories bring the meaning of family to me in a stronger sense. It is the continuation of the names through the years she uses, from one generation to another that keeps my interest and waiting for her new books. Jude is a wonderful storyteller, and I can't get enough of her books. I could never compare her books to any other author; never.

I have never lost a child, but I felt the pulse of loss through individual stories of these moms who have. At the right time, this little gem might be a lifeline to a grieving parent. I would think this book would be an anchor to any soul that needs to have hope.

Great book for class!

Such an easy to read book and provides practical knowledge, albeit some pretty obvious, but overall a good helper for my Social Work Practice class. The worksheets in the back that have scenarios for the reader to practice with are really helpful too and push you to think about what you would do in certain situations. I haven't done much of those since they're not required for my class but they are very helpful! I'm sad I only rented, if I would've known how much I would've liked the TB then I would've bought it!

third in trilogy best of weak bunch...

having read the first two books in this series My Fair Mistress: A Novel and The Accidental Mistress: A Novel, i was hopeful the final book would snap this trilogy out of its dwelling in 'blah-land'. not that the stories are awful. they just fail to leave me full of awe.

the story begins quite dramatically with a confrontation between hero and heroine. the heroine, gabriella st. john, is a penniless illegitimate daughter of an actress initially bent on killing the man who murdered her father. the hero, tony black, is a duke bent on remaining a bachelor. a case of mistaken identity puts them an intense situation right off the bat. warren weaves the sexual tension through the moments of their initial meeting quite well. after the misunderstanding is settled, gabriella finds herself thrusted into the rarified air of the ton, a beneficiary of a benevolent relative.

gabriella is one of those 'vivacious and wickedly good at men-sports' type of heroines, which is the kind of heroine i like. she is also sure early on that she wants to be with the hero. luckily for her, she's constantly in his company, as he's one of the best friends of said benevolent relative, so she gets to use her feminine wile to woo him into marriage.

tony is urbane, witty, and sexually assured. the build up from feverish fondling to consummation is well rendered and there is chemistry between hero and heroine.

however, i think this story ultimately suffers due to a few things:

1. tony is her relative's best friend, but after an initial bout of guilt (that lasted all of a few pages), he's petting gabriella all over the place. i understand he's supposed to be a rake, but he's also supposed to be extremely loyal to his friend according to the story. considering the fact he has no intention of marrying, he knows he is debauching a virgin. he always stops before things go too far but the danger for ruin is there and he comes across as selfish for putting his desires ahead of his friend's trust and the heroine's possible ruination. this wouldn't be a big deal, but the author illustrates tony as extremely loyal to his friend, so this is in conflict with that illustration.

2. the author has a very annoying habit of skipping over large bits of time and depicting moments important to the development of the relationship in flashback. this didn't just happen once or twice. this happens throughout the entire story, over and over again. in fact, almost every chapter or passage begins with something to the equivalent of "a few days/weeks later". perhaps this is done in order to assist in believability of the progress of the relationship. however, it backfires and gives the relationship a glazed over feel. as the reader i never get a good handle on gabriella or tony or their relationship because everything is being depicted almost in fast-forward mode with only a pause here or there to view a few scenes.

this is unacceptable to me, especially when there is no mystery or killer in the shadows to take away time from scenes between hero and heroine.

on the plus side, warren is definitely talented in depicting intimate scenes and creating sexual tension. she surprises me a few times within the story.

ultimately, this story proves to be just as 'blah' as the previous two. perhaps it's because the heroes and heroines in all three stories are very much alike. it's especially notable in this story when everybody makes a more than cameo appearance here, which dosn't help in making this particular story memorable at all.

i recommend this book for those who don't mind a story with a surface depiction of character and relationship development along with the sensual tension and well done intimate moments.

3.5 Stars.....I loved these characters but...

The ending was just so dang corny for for me. The author took so much time to nicely develop these characters and I really liked them...then, it became another I love him but how is he going to prove he loves me story...I'm just sick of those...could have made it better. It was fair to question Tony's love after the conversation that was overheard, but could have created a better path to the ending, instead of the typical.

A nice surprise

I was a little hesitant to buy this book because the reviews of this series from this author have not been glowing, but I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed this book. I was afraid that I wasn't going to like it because Gabriella is only 17, but this is really a non-issue because once the hero, Tony, gets past her age, it is sort of glossed over and doesn't seem to matter. I was glad to read that Gabriella never really had a moment where she did stupid things because of her age. I was sort of impressed with her. I thought she acted very smart in the latter half of the book where the author could have had her stray into TSTL territory.
I am lowering my rating to a 4 because I felt the last half of the book was superior to the first half. The first half had many, many, many scenes where we saw just how much Tony wanted Gabriella. He was like the energized bunny for a while. I don't think I could count how many times these two went at it.
But, overall, I liked this book. It wasn't perfect, but it was good enough that I think I will try the first two in this series and hope I am as pleased with them as I was with this one.
