About the Author

Rodney H. Jones is Professor of English at City University of Hong Kong. His main research interests include discourse analysis, health communication and language and sexuality. His books include Discourse in Action: introducing mediated discourse analysis (edited with Sigrid Norris, Routledge, 2005), Understanding Digital Literacies: a practical introduction (with Christoph Hafner, Routledge, 2012), and Health and Risk Communication: an applied linguistic perspective (Routledge, 2013).

Alice Chik is Senior Lecturer in The School of Education at Macquarie University. Her main research areas include narrative inquiry, literacy, and popular culture in language education. She is the co-editor of Popular Culture, Pedagogy and Teacher Education: international perspectives (Routledge, 2014).

Christoph A. Hafner is Assistant Professor in the Department of English, City University of Hong Kong. This book covers the prehistory of the Nile Valley from Nubia to the Mediterranean, during the period from the earliest hominid settlement, around 700,000 BC, to the beginnings of dynastic Egypt at the end of the fourth millennium BC. The author explores the prehistoric foundations pf many of the cultural traditions of Pharaonic Egypt.

The book focuses primarily on the fifteen millennia from 18,000 to 3,000 BC, when different cultures can be identified and the earliest forms of agriculture traced with some detail. Textile and ceramic production began at the end of the seventh millennium and were deployed with great skill and considerable sophistication by the beginning of the Predynastic Period at around 4,500 BC. By the Early Dynastic Period much that is considered characteristic of Ancient Egypt, such as cosmology and burial rites, was already established tradition.

This account of prehistoric Egypt will be welcomed as an outstanding narrative, combining both scholarship and accessibility.

If you're looking for thorough...

...this is what you need. Covering Egypt from the landmass's geological foundation right up to the end of the predynastic era. It's been freshly updated by Ian Shaw to include all of the latest arguments, especially with respect to the Paleolithic and Predynastic periods. Most Egyptologists, amateur and otherwise, will only be interested in the last two or three chapters and, in fairness, each chapter uses the lingo of the relevant field, obfuscating it to the average reader. Nonetheless, I can't think of another book which rivals this one for what it offers.

A bit too full of big words. Did not answer my questions either through words or artists' recreations of the PreDynastic world of Egypt before the Pharaohs that we know about officially.

Udder rubbish - PLEASE save your $$$

I bought this e-book because it had 4 stars on another website. Within the first 15 pages, I thought what the heck is this??? His writing was so fractured and all over the place, it was impossible to follow what he was trying to say. Chapters don't flow from one the next; some of them don't even make sense. However, since I actually paid for this (my mistake) I continued until Chapter 23 when I just couldn't stomach any more.

Dissociative Identity Disorder, schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder are very real, very serious mental illnesses. This "author" has no business attempting to create a believable memoir of any of these. He either needs a MUCH better editor or he needs to go back to the stage - because his book sure reads like a big act.

I'd give it a negative star rating if I could.

Inspired by the courage to share his volunerability and struggle to overcome

I keep trying to think of how to describe my reaction to this book. The book is not an act but a true inside view of what mental illness is and the internal struggles it causes. A perfect illustration how the outside of a person doesn't always show what lies within- what the core pain life experience brings. I only pray that I would have the courage to one day write a piece of art so bravely and courageously as this author has. I hope others will read this book and have compassion on those who have to suffer with the joys and difficulties that mental illness can bring. Thank you for your boldness Rikki Lee Travolta-- truly touched :)

Disappointed

I thought because I had bought the Read and Speak Beginner's book earlier and this author was one of them that the audio cd would be set up the same, that the English word would be given and then the Korean word, but that is not how it is. The Audio CD is good, but only if you are looking at the book at the same time. It is a straight list of the words from the book spoken only in Korean. Good for pronunciation, but not much else. Since I like to listen on my itouch while I am working this was a disappointment to me. The book set up is nice, and I am sure it will be helpful, but the CD was disappointing.

Excellent beginning

A well organized primer to get you started in basic vocabulary recognition. Each section focuses on a theme: greetings, family, food & drink, body parts, etc. There are short exercises within each chapter, and cut-out flashcards in the back of the book. The CD portion is wonderfully recorded. The best part is that the audio, which corresponds to the text, is in Korean. (Topic titles are introduced in English.) Yes! No distracting English translations for those who prefer to really dive in and get your ears trained to the sounds of the Korean language.

Excellent book for Korean vocabulary

I have used this book for a month and find it has helped me with my desire to learn Korean. The audio files are excellent. I wish they would have a little more time between words so I could repeat easier. Sometimes the next word is spoken before I spit out the last word. This is my only criticism.

James W. Skehan is a professor emeritus in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Boston College and a director emeritus of
Weston Observatory. He holds a doctorate in geology from Harvard University as well as a master s in theology from Weston College. As a Jesuit priest and geologist, he actively promotes dialogue between scientists and theologians. In 2002 he was honored to have Skehanos quadrangularis, a trilobite that lived 505 million years ago, named for him. Skehan is the author of Roadside
Geology of Massachusetts as well as many other books and articles.

Fun and Useful

This was a really great book. Some of the roadside geology books are just roadcuts but this does a great job of taking you through the historical geology of the area. I have been a geologist in the RI area for 30 years and still found I learned things in this book.

Yes, small states can have interesting geology too

If you were impressed by "Roadside Geology of Massachusetts",expect the same detailed, yet quite readable, treatment by the same author. Dr. Skehan is lucky to have 3 of the smallest states as his assignment, enabling him to cover nearly every significant aspect of the present and past geology of these states in a space equal to that devoted to many much larger states in others of this book series. Just because these states lack tall mountains, present volcanic activity, or great mineral wealth, by no means assume that their geology is boring and simple to grasp. As with most other northern Atlantic seaboard states, their terrain includes bits of a number of exotic land masses from the distant past welded on during tectonic plate collisions, as well as evidence of past rift valleys associated with the breakup of Pangea, as detailed in this book. This is the first book among the the many in this series that I possess that includes color photographs(quite a few), perhaps an indication of a new trend?
