This is the fourth e-book in the series, “CNC Programming Skills.” It explains the concept of offsets and how to measure these manually on i-series Fanuc machines or a similar control.

The very first thing which a person, who is new to the CNC world, needs to know is how to setup the coordinate system for machining. The machining coordinate system is defined by adding relevant offsets to the pre-defined machine coordinate system. When it comes to offsets, oh! these are just too many to confuse most people: External offset, Work offset, Geometry offset, Wear offset, Length offset, to name a few. And, these are to be understood in totality, as these are interrelated. Certain things are illogical also such as the wear value of the tool tip number on a lathe. Unfortunately, we cannot question Fanuc. We have to understand their language if we want to survive in the CNC world.

This book is written keeping in view the requirements and expectations of beginners who wish to learn on their own with no helping hand available to them. No background is assumed. One who has at least seen the operator’s panel and the manual data input panel, and knows elementary things like the directions of axes on a CNC machine, would be able to follow the book. Starting from the very basic, it has everything a seasoned CNC operator is supposed to know.

The following excerpts from the book would give some idea of the way of presentation:

Entering Offset Values into Offset Tables:
The procedure on a lathe as well as on a milling machine is similar. The basic procedure involves bringing the tool to the origin (or to a known coordinate position) of the desired coordinate system, and then use the measure feature of the control (through the MEASUR soft key) to enter the offset values automatically. Let us first take the example of determining work offsets on a lathe:
• Measure the diameter of the workpiece for which the work offset is to be determined, and place it in the chuck at the desired axial position.
• Select the MDI mode, and execute the desired work coordinate system code (G54 through G59) for which work offset is to be entered (so as to define or redefine it).
• Select the tool which is desired to be made the master tool, say, tool number 1, by pressing the tool change button on the machine operator’s panel required number of times. Alternatively, execute the appropriate tool change code (T0100 for tool number 1) in the MDI mode.
• Move this tool in the negative X direction to let it touch the workpiece at a known diameter position (say, X = 10) manually, using continuous feed (JOG mode), incremental feed (INC mode) or handle feed (HANDLE mode), as appropriate / convenient. For accuracy in positioning, it is recommended to use successively smaller increments (say, 0.1 mm, then 0.01 mm, followed by 0.001 mm), as the tool approaches the desired position. Continuous feed should be used only for quickly bringing the tool near this position, initially. To judge whether the tool has actually touched the surface, turn the spindle manually and look for a tool mark on the surface. Another method involves inserting and continuously shaking a thin piece of paper between the tool and the workpiece while the tool is made to approach the workpiece. The moment the paper gets stuck, the tool can be considered to have touched the surface. While inputting the values in the offset tables, allowance for the thickness of the paper can be taken, if felt necessary.
• Press OFS/SET key on the MDI panel. OFFSET, SETING, WORK and OPRT soft keys will appear. Pressing OFFSET soft key will display WEAR, GEOM and OPRT soft keys.
• For setting work offsets, press the WORK soft key. If it is already highlighted, i.e., selected by default, there is no need to press it again. The currently active workpiece coordinate system is displayed at the top left corner of the work offset screen.

Apart from this book, and a book on the basic CNC programming, he has published several e-books (Kindle Edition) in the series "CNC Programming Skills."�

The second book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Understanding G73 on a Fanuc Lathe." Its publication was inspired by the fact that most people, just because of ignorance, do not use such a powerful canned cycle G73 even when it has got a perfect application.

The third book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Live Tool Drilling Cycles on a Fanuc Lathe." These days higher-end lathes come equipped with live-tooling arrangement, allowing drilling, boring and tapping anywhere on the face of the workpiece, as well as in the radial direction at any angular position, using built-in canned cycles. These are explained with suitable examples in quite detail.

The fourth book in this series is "CNC Programming Skills: Understanding Offsets on Fanuc Machines." The very first thing which a CNC operator needs to know is how to setup the coordinate system for machining. About the Author
Robert K. Greenleaf, author of the classic Servant-Leadership, was director of management research at AT&T. He held a joint appointment as a visiting lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management and at the Harvard Business School. He died in 1990.

Groundbreaking but laborious to read...

If you read anything about the idea of servant leadership, you are likely to encounter a passing reference to Robert Greenleaf's work, if not an outright declaration of adoration. His book "Servant Leadership" and the essay entitled "The Servant as Leader" which is the first chapter of the book have now influenced multiple generations of leaders. He has shaped the language and cast a vision for effective and ethical leadership based first and foremost on serving others, which continues to gain traction in a culture where servanthood may elicit initial impressions of weakness or ineptitude. For offering a compelling alternative to cut-throat, me-first leadership, we all owe Greenleaf a debt of gratitude.

Nonetheless, as truly groundbreaking as this book and its ideas have been over the past 40 years, it's a chore to read. Greenleaf's writing style is rather cumbersome, and his points are sometimes difficult to understand. He writes primarily from an abstract, theoretical perspective, and I found myself often wishing that he would have integrated more stories, more practical examples into his writing. I often felt like he was possibly offering a reasonable idea, but I'd need to read about its actual implementation in a real-life setting to really understand what he was saying. But those examples were few and far between.

It is clear that Greenleaf was a brilliant man, and his influence in leadership within corporate, educational, and religious institutions continues to resonate into the 21st-century. But rather than reading this book, I'd recommend that those who are interested in servant leadership should read his initial essay ("The Servant as Leader") and then move on to books written by more accessible authors (i.e. Ken Blanchard). I'm glad to have plowed through this book because of its place in the modern leadership canon, but I'm hard-pressed to recommend it to anyone but the most serious of servant leadership scholars.

This is one of the best books on leadership that I have ever read. No one is on the same level when it comes to the concept of servant leadership.
My doctoral dissertation was on leadership and I have read thousands of pages on leadership. No book is better. It has more depth than a dozen books on the subject.

This book is a good starting point. I got it to prepare for the CIIP. It will increase your understanding of many topics covered on the CIIP, however, I do not feel that it contains enough information on its own for you to pass the CIIP.

Truly covers the "essentials."

This book covers the basics as we teach new personnel in our fire agency. This is the bible we use for fire fighting at the basic functional level. You can delve deeper into some of the topics if desired, but this gives the basic recruit the knowledge and ability/practice to do the job safely and efficiently. Specialize later, but get the basics down first. I always learn something from the classes I teach, and this is the required text for my fire classes.

Absolutely BRILLIANT. And highly addictive.

New Orleans, 1919. As a dark serial killer – The Axeman – stalks the city, three individuals set out to unmask him…

So. This year is going to be a GREAT year for debut novels and this right here is going to be right up there with the best of them. Why? Well you don’t find many books as well written as this one for a start – magnificent prose, flowing like a dream, hooking you into the ambience and sometimes horrific beauty of the New Orleans of the era, then shoving in there with you a killer, several “good” guys, one good gal and, well, Louis Armstrong. For pure escapism it doesnt come much better than this.

The Axeman was a real killer, who between 1918 and 1919 killed six people in New Orleans. He was never caught. He wrote a letter, re-produced in its entirety in the novel – and from this true tale, Mr Celestin has woven a magical but perfectly rational absolutely possible piece of fiction. When you blend fact with pure storytelling as beautifully as this you deserve Kudos. So Kudos Mr Celestin…

What else to say without spoiling it – Its difficult. Apart from the aforementioned Mr Armstrong, we have Ida (Sherlock Holmes fan), Michael (I fell in love) Luca (I fell in love again, ok I’m fickle) all trying to track down a killer, a ghost, possibly a madman – and all this is set against the most magnificent backdrop of the musically minded, mob ruled, insane rollercoaster of a city also known as New Orleans.

I can’t even begin to put into words how the city comes to life under the inspiring penmanship of Mr Celestin – A character in and of itself you will want to live there whilst also running screaming in the other direction – but mostly you will want to live there. Even so, added to that we have a well drawn description of the inherent racism of the times, the different communities and mindsets of such and some wry and ironic observations on life in general. Put all the above together and you have an ambitious novel indeed. And absolutely addictive reading. It will get into your head – for a while you WILL live there.

Fans of Historical Fiction are going to go into a paroxsysm of joy over this one, and any reader of any kind who enjoys a good yarn will have a lot of fun. Appreciate the art folks. This is it right here.

This stunning debut novel is set in New Orleans and based upon a real unsolved crime – when a killer dubbed, “the New Orleans Axeman” murdered several people between 1918-1919. The story begins when journalist John Riley receives a letter which he believes to have been sent by the killer, saying that the following Tuesday the Axeman will pass through the city and spare anyone playing jazz music. We then go back to a few months previously, with the murders having already started – mainly Sicilian couples who own grocery shops, found butchered, with tarot cards left behind as the Axeman’s calling card.

Several people are interested in discovering the identity of the Axeman. Firstly, there is Detective Lieutenant Michael Talbot of the New Orleans Police Department. Talbot is not liked by his fellow officers, having given evidence against a fellow officer – Luca D’Andrea, who has recently been released from prison, after serving five years inside. D’Andrea was working for the mafia and soon learns that, although not in prison any more, he is not really a free man. Carlo Matanga is the crime boss who took D’Andrea is as a young boy and now he wants D’Andrea to find out who the Axeman is. Lastly, there is the delightful Ida; obsessed by detective fiction, but barred by her gender and her race from joining the police. Having obtained a job on the bottom rung of Pinkerton’s detective agency, she finds that mostly her work consists of menial filing and admin tasks. Desperate to solve a case, she begins to investigate the Axeman in her own time, along with nineteen year old Lil’ Lewis Armstrong (eventually to become renamed as the great Louis Armstrong).

New Orleans is shown as a city consisting of various, segregated communities, each viewing the others with suspicion. As the various characters in the novel investigate the killings, we are taken through violent crime scenes, meet voodoo priestesses, feel the uneasy racial tension on the streets and discover the reach of the Sicilian mafia on the city. Most of the characters have secrets and all are well rounded and sympathetic. As the evening where the Axeman intends to visit approaches, a storm hits the city and events come to a climax. This is a thrilling, intelligent and atmospheric novel which is a pleasure to immerse yourself in. The end of the book suggests that there may, possibly, be a sequel. I can only hope that is the case, as I would really love to read more by this talented author.

Original and absorbing crime mystery

New Orleans, 1919 is a city filled with racial tension and fear. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving Tarot calling cards and promising not to strike where jazz is playing. The factual scene is set for Ray Celestin's powerful and atmospheric debut where the hunt is on for the killer.

Each central character has a strong and distinct voice and a particular interest and take on events. They're a richly diverse cast. Two cops, one with a secret, struggling to find any leads, the other a former cop just released from prison who lines up with the Mafia. The most entertaining character for my money is a mixed race Pinkerton's employee. She's a secretary desperately seeking a break to become a detective. She's obsessed with Sherlock Holmes and adds an often humorous and very different dimension to the tale.

Place and time are well defined and there's a real feel for the hustle and bustle of the city. It's one dominated by various tensions and the diversity of culture comes across really well. Voodoo, Mafia, racism, sexism and the integration of groups from different backgrounds all play a part in an exciting and original story which romps along with a real sense of urgency.

Ray Celestin captures the atmosphere of fear and mistrust really well and this is truly a fast paced and gripping read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will follow this author with interest.
