Good for fantasy fans of all ages

Inspired by Welsh mythology, this story is classic Garner: ordinary people pulled from their ordinary lives into a magical and dangerous world. It's intended for children but adults who enjoy fantasy will find it worth their time. It does have the patented Garner sudden ending - no winding down of the story, no hint of what happens to the characters after the climax.

This ranks below "The Weirdstone of Brisinghamen" but well above "Elidor," by the same author.

Creepy Story with Unobvious Ending, Read Effectively

This review is for the audio book on CD version of The Owl Service by Alan Garner.

I'm not going to go over the story here, as too many other reviewers have done so with painstaking (and painful) detail, except to say that the action takes place in Wales in the early to mid 60s, and concerns a population forced to periodically witness the recapitulation of a folk myth that can be found as one of the stories in The Mabinogion (once available as a translation by Penguin Classics), a collection of Welsh mythical stories that predate the written word.

The reading here is excellent, with just the right amount of characterization (aka "doing the voices") to make the story come alive in your headphones. I bought it for my teenager, who ignored it so I played it on my car stereo while she was with me. We only got four chapters done by the time we were finished with our errands, but she was eager for the rest. "Creepy story, Dad".

I first encountered this story as a TV production when I was younger than my kid is now. I read it when I was in my late 20s, and gave a copy to my girlfriend (now my wife) early in our relationship. I still found the reading here to be fresh, intense and riveting, some 25 years later.

A little background helps a lot

If I recall my Mabinogion correctly, Blodeuwedd was the girl made by a wizard from flowers. She was created in order to be the bride of a prince who had been cursed never to marry mortal woman. She conspired with her lover to murder the prince, and as punishment was turned into an owl.

It is not by accident that the flower pattern on the dinner service can be rearranged to form owls.

This is the root story behind "The Owl Service", and I think it's helpful to know the tale before reading the book, since it adds a bit of clarification that is otherwise lacking. That said, the book is wonderfully atmospheric, and a faithful adaptation of a classic Welsh tale to a modern setting. This has been done well in some children's books, (Nimmo's Magician trilogy and Cooper's Dark is Rising set), but is often less successful in more adult treatments.

If you would like a good, challenging, moody and engrossing tale, this book is well worth trying.

It's Like Your Own Personal Nanny

This book has everything a new parent could want to know - kind of like your own nanny on your kindle! New parents will find all the information on what they need to prepare for a new baby and all the things that might happen. Also, this book is filled with advice and perfect for answering those questions you might have late at night but don't want to call your mother to wake her up and ask!

Great Book for First Time Moms

I wish I had this book when my first child was born! It would have been really helpful! Suzanne has written a book with very useful information for any new Mom. So often when we read about motherhood the books tend to paint a rosy picture. Suzanne provides an honest, balanced look behind the scenes of being a new Mom.

When Suzanne talks about her first baby crying for 8 months I can surely relate! My second child had colic for 8 months and I thought I'd go nuts. It was the feeling of being helpless to make her feel better that was the challenge. I felt so badly that I couldn't seem to help her. However, both she and I survived and got through it!

I particularly can relate to singing to and talking to your baby. We joked in our family because I talked to our kids all the time. They all talked very early on and the joke was that they did so in self defence. I didn't mind being made fun of over this, however, because maybe it really did help them to learn to talk faster! Who knows? I also sang to our babies all the time and it seemed to be the most soothing thing I could do. They all loved it.

Suzanne has provided some excellent tips about how to calm crying. I've used most of them and can say that they usually work quite well. She presents simple, easy-to-apply ideas that anyone can try.

If you're having a first baby get this book. Or if you know someone who's having their first baby, this book would make a really awesome, inexpensive gift. I highly recommend it and plan to give it to my granddaughter, who's having her first baby in May.

PERFECT!

I started reading baby books because I will be a parent soon, and this book was by far the best one I have read out the 3 books I have bought so far. I love the step-by-step guidance on what I will actually need when having a baby. The tips in the book were great, and I hope I can follow up on those when my time comes.

Manuscript for Success

This is a wonderful book. What you are supposed to do is read a chapter a week. I had to plow right through the whole thing.
What Mr. Hill teaches, among other things is that you have to decide Exactly what you want, make a plan and go for it. He teaches about 40 other things too, but that is the main point.
Mr. Hill uses excellent examples from personal experience how to accomplish great things.
I'm sure you will love this book if you love success/self help type books.

Keynes meets Walras

The concern of the book are the various approaches to unify macroeconomics and monetary theory with general equilibrium theory. The book consists of three parts. In the first part, the problems are outlined, the interpretations of Keynes and the standard Arrow-Debreu-McKenzie model are survied, together with early approaches to unify them. The second part takes a look at Walrasian approaches, where prices and markets are central, and Edgeworthian approaches, where direct exchanges are examined, to macroeconomic questions. Both are examined from a static equilibrium perspective and dynamic disequilibrium theory. The third part is dedicated to reflections.
The book is surveying the field, it is not a textbook. The discussion remains on an informal level, with little mathematics being used. The book should be readable to advanced undergraduates and more advanced readers. The only drawback is that the book is a little bit old. There is no discussion of OLG models, which became popular later. Since the topic of dynamics has been neglicted by GE theorists for quite some time, the book is still worth reading.

For the4,827th time,Weintraub fails to integrate derivatives

Weintraub builds the foundation of this book on his chapter 3,which is titled "The 4,827th reexamination of Keynes's system".Unfortunately,for the 4,827th time,Weintraub demonstrates that economists are unable to integrate(take the antiderivative) Keynes's derivatives from pp.55-56,ft.2 and pp.282-286 of the General Theory in order to arrive at Keynes's original model .Any reader of this review,who has passed the first semester of college level calculus and analytic geometry,will discover that Keynes's basic model(the D-Z model of expected aggregate demand and supply) is that the expected aggregate supply function Z=g(N)=P+wN ,where P equals expected profit,w is equal to a constant money wage and N equals aggregate employment.The expected aggregate demand function is equal to D=pO,where p is equal to an expected price and O=f(N)is real output.The actual aggregate demand function is Y=C+I,where C=a+bY(or C=bY)and b equals the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods.Weintraub claims that Z=pq(pO),where q=f(N)is real output and that D=C+I(see Weintraub,pp.40-42).The"employment function"that Weintraub claims to derive on p.46 has absolutely nothing to do with the analysis presented by Keynes in chapter 20.Keynes worked with the real (expected) wage,( w/p).Weintraub's ordinate is incorrectly defined as the money wage,w.In Keynes's system,changes in the money wage cause shifts in the curves and not movement up and down a fixed"employment function"curve.Finally, Weintraub's claim that "The Z-D model was developed by S. Weintraub[1958]and extended by Davidson and Smolensky[1962]and Davidson[1972}",(Weintraub,p.47)makes no sense because anyone who can integrate the derivatives of chapter 20 ,or just follow Keynes's analysis,will see that the Z-D model is, contrary to E.Roy Weintraub,the intellectual creation and property of one John Maynard Keynes.

Colin Renfrew is Disney Professor Emeritus of Archaeology and former Director of the�McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge. He is the�author and editor of many books, including Before Civilization, Archaeology and Language, and�Prehistory and coeditor (with Paul Bahn) of The Cambridge World Prehistory. He is a fellow of�the British Academy and a life peer in the House of Lords.
