Definitely Worth it!

First, I have to admit that upon reading this I kept asking myself if I really could believe all this stuff about believing things would work out the more you put your mind to things in life but as I read on I found some things to be true and understandable. As I said, I am not really into the whole "self help" thing but things work here.

The opening g of the book started out great. I love books that grab you straight away. He speaks of how keys open things and are very important in life. You really can't go anywhere without your keys and they hold a very special metaphor for life.

I always say those things that Hartigan says such like treat your kids very special and hold them dear to you because the more you love a child, or anyone for that matter, they will be happy and so will you, making life and even the world more happy. Many things he makes clear and is so very true, most of it I already do. I feel I am a positive person and of course there are things I must change. The only thing I would change about myself would be not to be so lazy but it is hard to change when I go to graduate school, work full time, and have 2 babies under 2. It is difficult but as the book goes just stay happy and energy will come to me so long as I keep a positive attitude.

There are many great quotes and positive things in the this book and I didn't think that I would enjoy this but I read it in just over a day and a half because I was so wrapped in it that I couldn't let go. I feel that he had many good things to say and he gave such good advice that I hope many people read this and not take it for granted and take it as it is. There are no hidden things and now things that will make things go out of control. Everything is straight forward and easily understood and doesn't make you work hard. It makes you want to go out and laugh and make life easy and happy.

I was totally captivated by Gerry Hartigan's insightful take on appreciating life and the practice of staying optimistic. Being more aware and subsequently taking control of our reactions in difficult situations would be a great achivement for all of us. We all have heard it is not the situation....It is our reaction to the situation that defines us.

The chapter on gratitude was what moved me the most. I believe in the power of being grateful and part of this book's premise on abundance is to recognize what has already been given to you.

The author gives you more insight to a better understanding of how to create more meaning to your life.

Inserting beautiful quotes throughout the book from some of the most profound thinkers such as Twain and Dyer confirmed what Gerry Hartigan has written in this inspiring and engaging book.

Gerry Hartigan's plain talk makes it an easy read for a day's enjoyment. I highly recommend it!

A joyful life is more than available to us

I have no doubt that this book, The Keys to an Abundant Life, is making my life, both professional and personal better. I hold down a couple of jobs, both high-stress, and I needed to "find myself" as they say, I needed to re-focus and prioritize. I find myself deep in stress long after I got there and I need to pull myself back from the situation and relax but doing so without any tools to know how is difficult and even impossible for me sometimes.

The first thing you should know about The Keys to an Abundant Life is that this is not some "fluff" pamphlet disguised as an eBook. This is jam-packed full of information, not just little tips but page after page after page of tools to give your life abundant meaning and JOY and fulfillment. The biggest challenge I had as I said was separating myself from my stress when I get too involved and overworked due to a problem I'm trying to solve. This book showed me exactly what steps to take to use "me" time to find my center of focus, to calm myself, and to prepare myself for stress ahead so I can attack problems more wisely and from a calmer perspective. It works! Not only is virtually every other part of my life falling better into place but my professional handling of problems for the past 2 weeks at work has been much less stressful and MORE PRODUCTIVE. I can often see the forest in spite of the trees now.

There is just no way that someone like the author who has traveled so much and experienced so much cannot help but give valuable insight into the problems of people. Calmness, happiness, and abundant success are often achieved together, and isn't that the point? You don't want to be successful and grumpy, or have nothing and be calm. If you find your life lacking in many personal respects, if you just feel as though you can't move forward, this book might be the best investment in yourself you ever make! HIGHLY recommended.

About the Author
Jane Roberts studied History and the History of Art for a B.A. [Hons] degree at London University and took a Master's degree at the Courtauld Institute in Italian Renaissance Art, concentrating on the Venetian Renaissance. Thereafter she worked in London for a year during which time she wrote the catalogue for Colnaghi's exhibition of French Drawings - Post-Neoclassical. In January 1975 she became Curator of the Print Room at the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, where she produced the catalogue of the exhibition Leonardo da Vinci: Anatomincal Drawings, shown at the Royal Academy 1977-78, and has been co-author of the catalogue Holbein and the Court of King Henry VIII for the exhibition at the Queens Gallery, 1978-79.

Seth is the masters degree in channels

I love reading channeled material. I love the concept. Whether its just the authors imagination, or an actual entity speaking through a medium, Im fascinated by the concepts.
I read many different channeled authors at one period in my life. They're fun, good for some personal growth ideas.

And then there's Seth.

Seth's concepts are not cutsy fables, presented by a channel for light reading.

Seth is like the Noam Chomsky of channels. His writing is of such a magnitude and quality of depth, that he leaves other channels far behind.

I enjoy having my mind blown by powerful concepts. Even taking them as purely theoretical. I found just checking his world view out enriched my experience of my own life profoundly.
You don't need to think of any of it as "the TRUTH" or "THIS is the WAY". There's a million points of view out there. I just found Seth's point of view absolutely fascinating, well expressed, and worth the time to read.

If you're someone who loves ideas for the sake of ideas, and want a very empowering way to view the world, read Seth.

At all times his words seek to place one in touch with ones own power. He speaks to encourage individuals to take full responsibility for their own beliefs and to take responsibility for ones own life.

His books aren't "new age fluff". They are not "oh just think positive."

These are very real, very genuine essays on how to truly face ones own life. He is very aware of how nuanced our minds are at hiding from ourselves. He's like the best wise man of the village. These pages are full of loving empowering wisdom, a humorous poking at our egoism and limited beliefs.

Good Book, Helpful, For Seth Fans

For Seth fans, this is a good book to add more insight into the dream realms. Some of the concepts, such as parallel timelines, is very interesting and helpful, and there are good practical suggestions on how to remember and interpret certain dreams. It is one of Jane's older books, however, and doesn't have the same powerful clarity as some of the other books. Much of it relates to their personal life (Jane and Rob) and their own explorations. Since these occurred in the 1960s and 1970s, our collective consciousness has grown considerably to the point that much of this information seems a little antiquated. Still, I do believe in the validity and value of the Seth material, overall, and this book will help any who are on an awakening path, whether or not you are aware of the other Seth books. Better suited for those wanting to add to their understanding of the entity Seth and the life of Jane Roberts, a woman who contributed greatly to society through her efforts, sacrifices, and willingness to connect to those subtle realms.

Jane Robert's at her best

There were two great and controversial American innovators in the field of the spiritual in the seventies: Jane Roberts and Carlos Castaneda. Both are great writers, but their mentality is totally different from each other. Castaneda has suffered from a backlash for over twenty years now, but in my opinion Jane Roberts has only gained throughout the years. This is a posthumous book about the beginning of her experience as a reluctant psychic, and a good one. I'd say it is for anyone who likes to delve into matters deep and mysterious. The tone is personal and the scope is wide. If you feel that channelled information is a load of bs, check this out first. I did, and even if I don't buy everything that is said, i have to say I love Robert's style and her mind.

Kate Talkingtree, the 57-year-old writer protagonist of Walker's latest concoction, is a lifelong seeker after enlightenment in the carnal, political and religious realms. After dreaming of a dry river, she decides to take this as a spiritual clue and makes two river-centric spiritual quests. In one, she embarks on an all-female white-water rafting trip down the Colorado River, coming home to her boyfriend, Yolo, a painter, with potentially startling news. She has decided that it is time to give up her sexual life and "enter another: the life of the virgin." Yolo, a feminist-friendly guy, takes this as well as he can. Soon Kate is off on another quest, this time in the Amazon rain forest, where she hopes to heal herself through trances induced by yag‚ administered by an Amazonian shaman, Armando Juarez. Yag‚, a hallucinogenic beverage, is also known as Grandmother to the native peoples. Indeed, it turns out that Kate's Grandmother archetype-representing the Earth, the ancestors and those violated by patriarchy and racism-has been calling out to her. Meanwhile, Yolo, on vacation in Hawaii, encounters a transsexual Polynesian shaman, or Mahu, who charges him with the mission of giving up addictive substances. A subplot involving corporations conspiring to patent yag‚ creates an unintended irony: isn't the mindset that exploits native wisdom for Western corporate greed similar to the mindset that exploits native rituals for the sake of Western spiritual "healing"? Luckily, followers of the goddess, and presumably Walker's readers, are not very keen on irony. Those who retain some affection for that hopelessly outdated and patriarchal trope are advised to bypass this inflated paean to the self.

Yolo, on his own separate journey, meets a former lover, a Hawaiian woman now overweight and weighed down with the recent loss of her son to a drug overdose and a sense that she--like her son--has lost her way. Kate finds growing intimacy among a group of disparate souls who unburden themselves of their pasts under the influence of yage, a South American medicinal herb. Kate finds that the herb allows her to reveal her innermost secrets and puts her in touch with the elders. Despite their frictions, Kate and Yolo have similar reawakenings about the land as mother, overcoming personal and ethnic oppression, and dismantling barriers between the sexes, the races, and young and old. Now is the time to pick up this book!

Alice Walker has done it again. She has created a deeply rich world full of amazing characters that you hate to leave when the book is finished. Unlike most of her other works, this book has an extremely modern feel to it. It takes place in the present, and although it happens mostly in the jungles, it still feels like home.
Kate, the main character inspired by Walker's grandmother, channels a lot of Walkers feelings about the world today, and growing older. In the past, I've always felt the ancestors in Walker's work, but never much of herself. This book combines the two elements beautifully.
Do yourself a favor and big pick up this remarkable book, by one of the greatest voices of our time.

When Alice Walker, the earthy literary wordsmith, releases a new book, I feel

an unmistakable pull that compels me to not only buy the book but to read it.

So, when NOW IS THE TIME TO OPEN YOUR HEART was released

I did as the unforeseen forces commanded, I bought and read the book

and I haven't regretted one solitary reflective moment since I did.

In NOW IS THE TIME TO OPEN YOUR HEART, we meet Kate, a successful author who

is pondering her life. She seems to have reached a crossroads of sorts where

she is trying to unearth the meaning of her existence. This search leads her

on a number of soul-searching journeys that ultimately leads Kate to a truer

understanding of herself and others around her.

In true Walker style, this novel is filled with wonderful symbolism and

experiences which draw the reader in and makes him/her a part of the main

character's quest. Walker's characters deal with a myriad of issues including

aging, sexuality, religion, abuse, and defining oneself. I found myself

disappointed when I read the final words. I wanted the journey to continue

and somehow, after reading NOW IS THE TIME TO OPEN YOUR HEART, I think Walker

wants it to as well.

top three??

Despite enjoying previous works by this author, I actually stayed awake last night contemplating whether this novel was in my top three worst novels of all time. Why? It is meandering, cliched, downright offensive in terms of stereotypes and the main characters Kate and Yolo generally bear no resemblance to real people. To compound the problem, the other characters who play supporting roles are hollow shells used merely to make didactic points about oppression and abuse. Being black is depicted in terms of such simplistic stereotypes as "being more tolerant than anyone else", being native American is "being in touch with the land" and being white has nothing positive to say for it at all.

For example, the author seems unaware that if Kate actually lived in Africa as I do, her sexuality would be enough to get her thrown into jail by virtually every African government of the day and would result in her being an outcast by local communities. That's the level of tolerance here in the Motherland.

My point ultimately is that this novel is ahistorical, ill-informed and in terms of simple entertainment value - particularly tedious if you have any interest in wit, irony, insightfulness or relevance. Don't waste your money.

An insightful and inspiration account...

This sensitively researched account of how everyday women in conflict affected societies work to effect positive peace, remains one of my favourite books on this topic. It presents three case studies drawing from women's experiences in Northern Ireland, Israel/Palestine and Bosinia/Hercegovina. These case studies are important because they form part of a small (but growing) body of literature that portrays women's particular views on both war and peace. Also it presents cross-cultural perspectives- Cockburn does not fall into the trap of conflating these women's experiences and views into one "feminine" experience/voice. Instead, under the theme of "women and peace", the author explores the diversity and commonality which forms these women's approaches to peace in societies that often do not include women in formal peace processes. For anyone interested in the efforts of civil society to effect peace and social justice, or anyone with an interest in women's roles in war and peace, this is an excellent book.
