About the Author

Roy R. Robson is Professor of History and Director of the Honors Program at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. He teaches courses on modern Europe, Russia, and world religions. His interdisciplinary teaching includes “Intellectual Heritage: Time” and “Views of the Cosmos." Robson writes extensively on Russian history and world religions. His last book,  Solovki, won praise from the New Yorker, The Times (London), Condé Nast Traveler, and the Journal of Modern History. Robson serves as the series editor on Orthodox Christianity for Northern Illinois University Press. This year, the National Endowment for the Humanities honored the University’s Intellectual Heritage program by granting Dr. Robson a fellowship to expand his course on Time. Dr. Robson is president-elect of the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies, the largest regional association of Slavic scholars in America.

Kindle Edition needs some work

Amazon is proud of the Kindle edition of this book, and I have no idea why. They state:

This is a problem - on 7" tablets or a first-gen iPad, it is impossible to read without zooming and panning. I would like to read it on my laptop, as it says in the description that it is available for all platforms, but when I try it tells me it can only be read via a Kindle app on a mobile device.

Now that I see they've released a Kindle Fire app for PCs, I'll try that tonight and see if it's any better.

Breadth and Depth

Subtracting a star for the lack of insight on indigenous religions. It is harder to go in depth but can give better understanding into the development of religion. Perhaps this is for a different textbook. The other chapters have such depth, however, and it is sad for it to end, so to speak.

Although it did have a good bit of information in it

This "book" reminded me more of a magazine rather than a higher educational reference book. Although it did have a good bit of information in it, I don't like feeling as if my intelligence is being insulted and or the material being "dumbed-down" in order to appeal to the younger generation of college goers.

A lucid and eloquent examination of healthful breathing.

This book was a lucid and eloquent examination of healthful breathing techniques, and the benefits experienced from their use.
Very few authors are capable of expressing complex concepts in simple language, but this author does it well.
I originally found this author quoted at length in The Roots Of Consciousness by Jeffrey Mishlove, and decided to follow up. I am glad I did.
The book begins with reviewing the importance of breath to living things, and then on to the physiology of breathing. Then the different styles of breathing are examined, along with the benefits and detriments of each. The book then progresses to look at a much more healthful method of breathing, along with exercises making use of this new method. The benefits from the physiological to the mental, emotional, and finally spiritual realms are discussed.
It is a practical handbook, with a minimum symbolic expression, and a maximum of well thought out, simply expressed important information on an often underappreciated topic.

If you read and do the exercises in this book, amazing changes will result in your mind and body. These exercises are deceptive they don't seem impressive, any person, any child could do them, so it goes without saying most people will lose interest because it doesn't seem arcane enough. Those who do the work will be amazed by what results.

I picked up this book (1905 edition) as a martial artist hoping to help me with my KI breathing excerices. This book improved my breathing technique introduced me to yoga and eastern thought. "Science of Breath" provides a great balance between western theories and eastern ideas. This book would be a good aid to anyone in the martial arts or those who just study KI.

horrible editing ruined this book

Here's the good: the characters and story line, for the first couple of chapters, were intriguing and worth reading.

Here's the bad: the editing is AWFUL. I mean, terrible. Words missing in sentences. Using "this" instead of "that." Incorrect pronouns (like using "he" instead of "I"--very confusing!). Misplaced quotation marks. Incorrect use of "'s". Missing periods. Without even trying, I counted 11 mistakes in the first 2 chapters. After that, I couldn't deal with it any more and deleted the book.

If the book gets cleaned up, I suspect it could be worth 4 stars. Until then, it's unreadable.

This book would have been so much better

if not for the horrendous editing or lack thereof. I usually try to ignore the editing but this was so awful, not only was it a distraction, it made it really confusing to figure out what he was saying. At one point, half a chapter was repeated. I thought something was wrong with my Kindle. If the editing is ever cleaned up, the book deserves at least four stars but not in its current state.

Could use some editting

As other reviewers have said this books editing really needs some work. It has only a few typos that I can remembers off hand but there were quite a few missing words and the formatting was a mess in general.

Another reviewer mentioned that Caine talks about breasts a lot. This is fairly true. A good way to think of Caine is that he does not really have a filter, he does and says what he wants to for the most part. The vast majority of other characters in the book are women and seemingly all are attractive and all have something for the protag. If you are looking for deep and interesting characters you wont really get it here. The story is also fairly straightforward.

Sub par characters, bad editing and yet I still enjoyed the read. Caine is a fun guy to read. A lot of the comments about women get old after awhile as does his overall attitude but he has a brazen confidence or even cockiness that I enjoyed. I'm pretty sure ill pick up book 2 but don't hold me to that, the thoughts of how bad the editing could be in a new release kind of scares me to be honest.

About the Author

Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Atomic Theory, the book it all started from.

In this book, Wells describes nuclear warfare and begins the descriptions of a possible future. He named uranium, "Carolinum" and talked about a chain reaction that would leave radiation behind so that nothing would survive afterwards, even if they did escape from the weapon itself. Dr. Szilard, the man who came up with the idea of splitting the atom with a nuetron, did so after reading, "The World Set Free". I say, NO KIDDING! Wells lays the idea right out in front of the world's face, laughing! It then goes on to describe future events that have occured, though in different times, and some which have yet to occur. He spoke of Carolinum (uranium), the atomic theory and its increadible source of power. He spoke of robotics and computers replacing people in the work place. This is where it all started folks. AND THIS IS JUST IN THE FIRST 100 PAGES! Trust me... it gets better :) If you wish yo know more on the theory and the bombs' construction, I refer you to Richard Rhodes. If you want to know the mind and the story that began this whole deal, read this book!!!!

A Man Ahead of His Time

H. G. Wells is not usually given enough credit for this particular book (in my opinion, his best). The focus is usually upon one of his other works such as The Time Machine. The World set Free is truly staggering in its scope, scale, and vision of the future. It is interesting to note how much Wells got correct about the future, and to see how much he did not. The fact that this book was written before World War I indicates his genius at seeing what might be possible and how this might come about. I cannot recommend this book more highly than by saying AN EXCELLENT, FASCINATING, GRIPPING PAGE-TURNER. A quick point about the original year of publication - if my memory is correct, it was originally published in 1910, rather than 1914.

The World Set Free (recently reissued as The Last War) is a 1914 science fiction novel by H. G. Wells. When atomic bombs are developed and the world is threatened with universal devastation, its leaders are forced to rethink war, government, and society.

The World Set Free is remarkably prophetic, as Wells forecasts both nuclear war and the capacity for mutually-assured destruction. And while Wells misses the mark on the way atomic bombs work (his atomic bombs have the same explosive power as conventional bombs, but they just keep on burning), he certainly doesn't underestimate their destructive power.

This book feels like a novel only in the sense that it relates a series of fictional events. What few individuals appear here are scarcely characters in the literary sense - other than Egbert, none are developed in the slightest. This simply wasn't what Wells is trying to do - Wells is interested in the technology and its ramifications, and because that's what he focuses on, The World Set Free reads like a fictional history book, or perhaps like an outline for a longer novel. This keeps it from ever getting too interesting, and while it's a short book, it can be hard to get through.

In short, The World Set Free is an impressively-imagined but not very well-written piece of prophetic science fiction.

He has worked in movies and television as a background actor, but perhaps he is the kiss of death for television shows: he has been in three of them, all of which have been cancelled before completing the first season (including the now infamous "Do No Harm", which only aired twice before getting the axe).

Wow! This is hard core BDSM at its best. It is not for those who prefer more lighthearted BDSM. The story takes place in an alternate society where women are sold into slavery because of debt and the buyers are allowed to do whatever they want to these women. There are two women who are in this story - one of them is a very stuck-up, bitchy society blonde named Olivia Addison. She is broken completely and very harshly by her new master Caine. The second woman is a sweet, red-headed innocent named Elenora who is also broken by her new master although she comes to enjoy it a lot more than Olivia ever seems to. This is hard core BDSM but very hot so if you are a fan of this type of erotica, you will definitely love this book.

If you enjoy non-consent erotica then this is a good one to pick up. It has hot sex scene's that are very harsh and some pretty hardcore pain. Although it is not as well described as I like my erotica (in other words it is more "he did this, she did that, a little dialogue, then done" -- rather than a more extended drawn out scene where you get into the character's head really well and the parts of described in vivid detail including what it feels like) it still satisfies. This is not romance - it's really PWP non consent. If that's your thing - I can recommend this author's works. They are a little short for the price but in general satisfy.

The book Self Realization truly does reveal the ultimate goal of life- love, peace, and truth. The author provides a very clear, concise, and step- by- step guide to what self-realization really is, and how one can know oneself (staying very much a part of this material world.) Aspirants and people curious to embark on the quest to uncover self-realization should know that it is simply the knowing of body, mind, and soul--that we are one with the omnipresence of God. In her book she stresses that we are not merely near the Absolute Being at all times, but that we are just a part of the creator now, as we ever will be. We do not have to pray that it come to us, but that God's omnipresence is actually our omnipresence. In her book the author also explains the science behind it, and why it works. Today, unfortunately we live in a world driven by science and technology, and nothing that can't be scientifically explained tickles our fancy. So, in her book she herself sums the science of self- realization in the words of Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati as," Out of the capacity of the brain, only about ten percent is active and the remaining ninety percent is dormant. The awakening of the dormant ninety percent of the brain is self-realization."

Untouchable God lives up to the author's reputation and delivers fantastic stories of India's fight for justice.

Untouchable God is another hit from an author that has so well chronicled the hypocrisies of Brahminical culture and at the same time glorified the working, productive castes to which the Brahmins have assigned abusive and derogatory names. In every story someone from the low or out castes of India dreams of equality and justice before being beaten and abused by the schemes of India's wily Brahmin national leaders. From Muslims being the victims of Tilak's conspiratorial Ganpati scheme to connive the OBCs into believing the lie that they are Hindu, to the Untouchable mixed caste Gurram Jashuva who was kidnapped by Krishnamurthy in order to steal his poems, Kancha narrates vivid and realistic accounts of the corrupt and deceitful Brahminical mindset, while portraying the harrowing tales of the victims of these wicked plots and highlighting their refusal to accept this injustice as being their destiny in life.

The "Untouchable God" is identified as simply the God that touches the Untouchables, whether that be Allah, who saved a 7 year old boy from an assassination plot, or Jesus, who rescued an Untouchable whose only crime was thinking about equality and whether or not the same God that made dogs, who eat from both Shudra and Untouchable houses, also made humans who would never behave so honorably. Kancha contrasts this God with whichever god was responsible for creating the Rig Veda, which divides humans into castes and assigns to them different worths and values based on the part of his body he used for their creation.

Kancha moves all throughout India, highlighting the differences between particular Brahmin practices, but expounding the commonality they share of their refusal to treat low and out castes with dignity, respect or honor. Each chapter is pretty well standalone once the first chapter has been read, and this allows the author to show how different religions, ideas and concepts, from Christianity in the South to Socialism in the North East, have all been co-opted by the Brahmins and have failed to produce any substantive movements towards the annihilation of caste and the restoration of dignity and justice to India's 800 million low and out caste slaves.
