About the Author
Anne Sheffield is the author of two well received books on depression, How You Can Survive When They're Depressed (Harmony, 1998) which won a a Books for a Better Life Award as well as the 1999 Ken Award from the New York City affiliate of National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and Sorrow's Web (Free Press, 2000) which deals with the topic of motherhood and depression. She has worked as a scientist at the Population and Development Program of the Battelle Memorial Institute and has run her own consulting firm. She lives in New York City.

Excellent support for those whose partner is depressed

In this book, author Anne Sheffield offers excellent support to those who are involved wiht someone who is struggling with depression. The best thing about this book is the way in which it both normalizes and validates the responses of the non-depressed partner, assuring the reader that they are not going crazy and that they are not alone in their feelings of frustration and confusion. Sheffield also provides plenty of helpful information and advice, including educational information about depression, strategies for persuading your partner to seek help, ideas on how to set limits with your partner, and guidelines for deciding whether to stay or leave.

I think that most people who are living with a depressed mate will find this book to be extremely helpful, but I did have a few minor criticisms. First of all, although this book was born out of the message boards that are a part of Sheffield's Depression Fallout web site, I felt that she relied a bit too heavily on the anecdotal information posted by online users. Secondly, Sheffield also has a tendency to rely on anecdotal information from her own experiences (she grew up with a depressed mother, and she herself suffers from depression), which results in occasional overgeneralizations. For example, she emphasizes that ALL people who are depressed are angry--not necessarily the case. Similarly, she laughingly dismisses therapists who suggest to the non-depressed partner that the problem might lie in the relationship--isn't it possible for someone to be depressed AND be legitimately unhappy with their relationship at the same time? Sheffield seems to say no. Finally, her overall attitude comes across as quite pessimistic, offering only brief glimpses of hope that perhaps the relationship can be saved.

Despite these issues, I definitely feel that this book is a worthwhile read, and as a psychologist, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any clients in this situation.

An honest book

It is an amazing concept, to realize there is a messageboard somewhere in cyberspace populated with people like me, not just people who love a depressed partner, but people who suffer the confusion, the hope, the anger, the torment, and the surreality of it all. Even more amazing is this book: Anne has packed a huge body of folk knowledge and professional knowledge into these pages, both from the messageboard the book was based on and from psychiatrists and the mental health community. And that's what really made this book ring true for me; in reading what other wives and husbands were going through, in their own words, I was suddenly able to believe that I was not alone. I've spent so much time telling my partner that he is not alone, that millions of people suffer from depression. It never occurred to me that I must, therefore, also not be alone; there must also be other people who are struggling to lead good lives in spite of trying to love a depressive.
Anne's book offers a lot of practical suggestions about how you can do both: be fair and loving to your partner and also genuinely enjoy your own life. She doesn't sugarcoat it, and by being honest, she shows you how there is a way through, that by using your basic sense of fair play and a respect for your own well-being, you can once again create a world that makes sense.
Without even telling my partner I've read this book, I have changed some of my interaction with him for the better, and I can see it having a positive effect not only on me, but on him. I am looking forward to future improvements, as I implement and practice more of Anne's advice.

An important book I will be immediately recommending.

I have always included the topic of the effects of depression on relationships, marriages, and families when I give talks on depression, but you seldom find the topic addressed at length. Finally, someone has given it the attention it needs.

Author Anne Sheffield, who grew up with a depressed mother and has suffered from depression herself (and who acknowledges she has inflicted that suffering onto her relationships), knows her subject and it shows.

Her knowledge has grown via the thousands of visitors to her website message board ([...]) who write of their struggles and lessons from being the partner of someone depressed. A post on this message board prompted and grew into this book.

Depression Fallout helps you understand what depression looks and feels like from the sufferer's viewpoint as well as from their partner's (and their children's) perspective.

People who are depressed have similarities. They tend to devalue themselves and their relationships. They erode bonds by their self centered, pessimistic, and irritable tendencies. Their depression confuses them - one day they don't know what they feel, the next day they need you, and the following day they've decided they never loved you to begin with.

Depression fallout is what happens to you if you're on the receiving end of this illness. You probably move through stages of confusion, self-blame, demoralization, resentment, and a longing to be free of your partner and their depression.

If this is you, please read the book. You'll find stories to bolster your sagging self esteem and you'll learn ways to handle your communication with your partner. There's an excellent section on psychotherapy and medication (her section on meds includes some very specific and up-to-date info).

Once you've read the book, get into counseling if you're not already.

An Effective Langauge Series

The Expressways series of textbooks is designed to accelerate an English student's language mastery through exercises that teach visually through reading, tactilely through writing, and audibly through speaking. The student's abilities mature through practicing these skills for proper mastery of the English language.

My wife is a Chinese native who recently began English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at our local high school. The instructor uses these textbooks as the primary tool for learning. We have found them to be an effective and fun way to learn together as a couple and it has helped her language skills and personal confidence.

The exercises in the textbook are designed for a classroom setting or, if a classroom is not available, for practice with a partner. My wife benefits through classroom interaction twice a week and by working with me.

It is very important the student is able to work with someone to practice the lessons in the book. I would strongly suggest purchasing the companion workbook that accompanies this textbook for added exercises. There is also an audio component to this series that can be helpful, but if the student will be in a classroom or can practice daily with an English-speaking person, the audio is not necessary.

The conversational lessons in the textbook use iteration to teach. The student practices scripted conversations with a partner and phrases are changed to vary the meaning. The conversation remains similar each time, which reinforces the language structure, and the student learns through familiarity and practice. This is a crucial component to the learning process.

In addition to the interactive components are lessons that teach the correct grammatical structure of English sentences. Lessons force the student to think about what they're saying and practice the rules and logic in their mind before selecting the best answer. These grammatical lessons are reinforced through the practice conversations.

I would recommend the Expressways series for anyone who wants to increase their English mastery, but it is vitally important the student has a partner to assist with the lessons. This is best accomplished in a classroom setting at least once a week and/or with a friend or loved one close to the student. This is not a self-study textbook. While some of the lessons are accomplished alone, the real learning comes through verbal interaction and practice.

If you do not have access to a classroom or study partner, purchase the audio component along with the textbook and seek-out English speaking people to talk to.

With time, persistence, and practice, your English skills will increase, and the Expressways series of language textbooks will help you accomplish your goals.

“Dear Mr. You” comes as a revelation – actually, one revelation after another. Mary-Louise Parker’s book of memoiristic letters to some of the men in her life reads like a collection of first-rate short stories, varied in mood and tone but united by a perspective comprising gratitude, forgiveness, courage, and humor. Parker lives intensely and sees acutely; she has a warrior’s determination and a poet’s insight. I found myself reading this mesmerizing album of portraits like poetry, in fact: only a few letters at a sitting, the better to savor their resonances.

Parker recounts transforming episodes with some of her male heroes, among them a movement teacher, her acting mentor, the family priest (“who believed in God and still liked him”), the no-nonsense accountant who taught her how money works, the beekeeper next-door, and a former child soldier from Uganda. She depicts love affairs in all their ambivalence and fluctuating passions, and commemorates her most awful romantic relationships in an epistle to Cerberus, the mythical three-headed dog at the maw of Hell. She speculates about the hard-drinking Grandpa she never knew, and relives the relinquishment of her father’s body after his death. He was a three-war veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder who punched holes in the wall, and she misses him too profoundly to convey: “It would be like blue trying to describe the ocean.”

Here is the worst imaginable encounter between a pregnant woman and a New York City cabdriver with no idea where he’s going, here, a wishful meditation for a newborn baby boy. Here, even a note of apology to NASA “for repeatedly stating that you were a massive misuse of tax dollars and basically an oversized playground for those who like to wear antigravity suits.” She then admits (as men so rarely do), “I didn’t know what I was talking about.”

Parker’s recollections evoke the very nature of memory, their potent images never too fully limned, never lingering over the emotions they incite. “Dear Mr. You” reminds us what a glorious business life can be even at its worst, if you can tug it into the right frame of view. It makes me hope that my young son might grow up to be the sort of fellow worthy of a letter from someone the caliber of Mary-Louise Parker. I cannot imagine anyone worth knowing who would not fall in love with the shimmering vision at the core of this masterful book.

A beautiful and unique read even for people who don't know who Mary-Louise Parker is

This is not your typical celebrity memoir/essays--in the BEST possible way.

Mary-Louise Parker has written letters via her stream of consciousness to everyone from 3 men she dated that she refers to as Cerberus to NASA.

These are not the type of stories/essays you're used to where someone says I used to be a nerd and then tells you a story proving their nerd-status. Here MLP, in what feels like free flowing thought, takes one person, and speaks to them in a way that reveals so much more about herself and the human condition.

There were moments so beautiful and raw that they crawled under my skin and will forever live with me. Other times, out of the blue, I found myself laughing only to suddenly be surprised and find myself teary-eyed. The stories, content, and writing are surprisingly wonderful and before I'd even finished I knew this was a book I'd always want on my bookshelf.

*This is not for celebrity gossip fans looking for MLP to "dish dirt" on anyone.

Drop Everything and Read!

I’m not one to read books written by celebrities, but I read a review of this memoir that intrigued me enough to give it a try. I was maybe ten pages in when I sat down and ordered five copies for gifts—my faith in its being a great book was that strong. As I continued to the finish, that view was momentarily tested here and there, but ultimately confirmed. Forget that this woman is a famous actress, forget that she’s the sexiest being on the planet, this woman is *deep.*

In *Dear Mr. You* Parker has written a series of pseudo-letters to particular men, most of them generically designated (“Dear Emergency Contact,” “Dear Yaqui Indian Boy,” “Dear Grandpa,” etc.), who have all been part of or influenced her life. The narrative is in the second person (the subjects are all addressed as “you”), which as it turns out is an elliptical but effective form of storytelling. This approach lends an offbeat perspective, in which the person addressed seems to know more about Parker than she does, while at the same time each letter is equally revealing about both of them. I call the book a memoir, but it defies categorization—feels like fiction, structured like essay. Really it’s just one soul speaking directly to others, with us peering over their shoulders.

The writing is simultaneously casual and sophisticated. Offhand sentences thrust you into the heart of life. Tiny telling moments echo with the particular and the universal. Few words are ever wasted. Parker has a fine ear for dialogue and a good grasp of idea, and all of this gets thrown at the page in a way that seems hasty but is really cunning. Parker is impatient with stylistic norms like quotation marks; she uses them from time to time, but often the words just can’t be held within the fences of convention and pour onto the page for the reader to sort out. I’m a copy editor and ought to hate this but I don’t.

As for the Parker who emerges from this gumbo, she is passionate and inward, loving and angry, vulnerable and strong, earthbound and spiritual, all of human experience right there for us to laugh and cry with. She embodies the old Whitman clich� (“You say that I contradict myself; very well then, I contradict myself: I am large, I contain multitudes”). But in the end, if we all had the courage to be as ruthlessly honest as she is, wouldn’t the same be true of us?

A blow-my-eyes-off 5-star read for me.

I've always loved and admired Mary Louise Parker as an actress and to discover that she's an amazing writer was an absolute delight. She's honest, real and unafraid to be who she is. A quality I aspire to. I look forward to discovering more of her writings.

The ultimate Obamian, of course, was Obama himself. Aides such as McDonough and Rhodes reflected the president’s own views. Obama was as new to foreign policy as they were, and as little influenced by previous Democratic administrations.

Over the years, far too much has been made of how Obama’s race and upbringing supposedly affected his thinking about the world. Political opponents, diplomats and journalists have sometimes speculated about the impact on Obama of his father’s roots in Kenya or of his childhood years in Indonesia. Some have theorized that Obama had somehow been imbued with an “anticolonial” perspective and was hostile, or at least unsympathetic, to British and European traditions.

There is little if any evidence to support this theory, and it represents an extremely selective interpretation of Obama’s youth. His postprimary education included a private college-prep school in Hawaii, private colleges in Los Angeles (Occidental College) and New York City (Columbia), and law school at Harvard. Obama’s secondary and higher education, in other words, was not radically different from that of, say, John F. Kennedy (prep school and Harvard), Franklin Roosevelt (prep school, Harvard and Columbia Law School), Richard Nixon (Whittier College and Duke Law School), Gerald Ford (University of Michigan and Yale Law School), George H. W. Bush (prep school and Yale), Bill Clinton (Georgetown and Yale Law School) or George W. Bush (prep school, Yale and Harvard Business School). If Obama’s worldview was influenced by his upbringing—and even this is an open question—then surely those long years of elite American schooling must have counted for far more than the father he barely knew or his four years in elementary school overseas.

Instead, Obama’s views of the world and of America’s role in it were shaped to a far greater extent by his age and by the times in which he came to national prominence. Obama was the first president since Vietnam whose personal life and career were utterly unaffected by that war. Every president since Gerald Ford had tried, in one fashion or another, to declare an end to the Vietnam War or to put to rest its continuing impact. Ford had ended the American presence in Vietnam. Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush had both proclaimed the end of the “Vietnam syndrome,” their term for the fear of military intervention and casualties. Bill Clinton had normalized diplomatic relations with Vietnam.

The war had nevertheless retained its potency in American political life. When Clinton ran for the presidency in 1992, he had to explain why he hadn’t served in the military during Vietnam. When George W. Bush ran in 2000, his campaign was obliged to justify an assignment in the Texas Air National Guard that kept him out of Vietnam. In the 2004 presidential campaign, after the Democrats nominated a Vietnam veteran, the Republicans managed to raise questions about John Kerry’s service on a “swift boat” in that war.

In the election of 2008, however, Obama, who was only thirteen years old when the last American troops came home from Vietnam, defeated a Republican candidate who was a Vietnam War hero and former prisoner of war. Vietnam had finally vanished from American presidential politics.

Obama was also the first American president in the modern era who neither served in the military nor was subject to the draft. In this respect, he was a fair representative of most other Americans under the age of fifty-five. Knowing nothing else, Obama could take as a given the existence of the volunteer professional army; military service was a career, not an obligation. The military could be seen as simply a constituency in American society— another big, powerful group with which Obama could try to reach compromise, bridge differences or find a centrist position. “He’s not suspicious of the military, and he’s not scared of the military,” said Denis McDonough. “It’s a vitally important institution that’s part of this country and part of this government.”

Finally, Obama was the first president to come to the White House after George W. Bush’s intervention in Iraq. The mere fact that he followed Bush provided Obama with considerable opportunity for improving America’s relations with the rest of the world. In this respect, Obama had considerable success. He sought to avoid the rancorous relations Bush had with the leaders of France, Germany, Russia and other countries. During his second term, Bush had himself tried to smooth over the frictions caused by the Iraq War, but he was so unpopular that these belated efforts didn’t have much impact; no elected president or prime minister in Western Europe could be seen as too close to Bush. After Obama’s election, European leaders once again wanted to have their pictures taken alongside an American president.

The 2008 financial crisis affected Obama’s foreign policy and America’s international standing at least as much as the Iraq War. The impact of the financial crisis went far beyond the mere lack of money. The United States had far greater difficulty holding itself up to the world as an economic model. In the countries that were harmed by the financial crisis, some of the blame was assigned to the United States—legitimately so. In those few countries where the financial crisis did not hit so hard, such as China and Germany, there was a newly acquired sense of superiority to the American economic system.

The Obamians

In The Obamians, a somewhat wonky term used to describe the chief Obamian (Obama) and his Obamians (aides), James Mann attempts to discern, through his foreign policy, an Obama doctrine. While his domestic policy has been hampered by Democrat (Guantanamo) and Republican (Obamacare, nee Romneycare) alike, day-to-day foreign policy execution does not require congressional approval. Foreign policy then, unlike domestic, is a "clear test of his underlying ideas and choices."

Obama chose his inner circle among a small and informal network of people with no foreign policy experience to purposely cultivate an image of Washington outsiders. His appointment of Hillary Clinton, a pragmatic decision to remove her from the Senate where she could possibly form a coalition against him, required a revamping of this image, and thus was born the "team of rivals" phrase to give a "grand historical gloss to the uneasy merger of the Obama and Clinton teams." In contrast, Bush's aides, his "Vulcans" as the author calls them, all shared a common history, namely Vietnam.

Mann has a lot to say about Vietnam. He argues that Obama is the first president not, in some way, shaped by the war. This is true, and interesting, but he takes this argument to extremes. Obama's team is young and they "tend to believe their ideas are new and original, a response to events or trends of the twenty-first century" and not, as Mann repeatedly argues, in response to Vietnam. While the Obamians came of age in a world influenced by Iraq and the 2008 financial crisis, Mann believes Vietnam plays a seemingly unconscious influence through which all of their decisions filter. While Mann is given to such sweeping statements, perhaps the only extent to which Vietnam plays a role is that Obama has to contend with the remnants of McGovern's left-wing antiwar base of the Democratic party.

Avoiding this and other extremes, Obama has attempted to "position (himself) in the middle ground, detached from the fray." While Obama is not simply a continuation of Bush (Mann cites healthcare and gay rights), any president has to contend with entrenched bureaucracies concerned solely with maintaining the status quo. Obama's positions have therefore been simultaneously more and less hawkish than his predecessor. By toeing the line of the middle ground, he has made constituents of both parties unhappy.

Resulting criticisms leveled against him have fundamentally misunderstood who he is. For a clearer picture, Mann turns to the Arab Spring and dissects the Obamian response to each country. In Libya, Obama showed the two most distinctive aspects of his foreign policy. First, that he was not squeamish about employing military power, as both parties believed. Second, that he was willing to recast the United State's role in the world to fit its limited resources, a role "far less wedded than his predecessors to the idea of an enduring American primacy or hegemony." His decisions were "by circumstance and strategy, country by country," based ultimately upon advancing American's interests in the region. Mann is concerned more with how Obama thinks than in a minutiae discussion of positions he takes.

An aspect missing from this discussion is Republicans. He assesses an event and a liberal response, leaving out the extent to which liberals are influenced by a conservative response. Republicans play virtually no role at all at any point throughout the book. Leaving out this crucial opposing view is surprising, as Mann is unbiased in his assessment of Obama. While he makes the argument that Vietnam shaped liberals who then influenced Obama, he implicitly argues that Obama is shaped more by these unconscious influences than in reaction to President Bush and his policies, which played a huge role in making his presidency possible.

Bush's policies "represented the outer limits of the expansion of American power." Obama's, on the other hand, have merely "added up to centrism." His presidency has marked "the beginning of a new era in America's relations with the rest of the world, an era when American primacy is no longer taken for granted," and an era in which America has less money and power to implement its will.

Solid and Timely Account of Foreign Policy Under Obama

This is a solid and timely account of American foreign policy under President Obama. Mann focuses on foreign policy narrowly and fully discusses military strategy while mostly ignoring other aspects of international relations such as trade policy and issues like budgeting and defense spending which require negotiations with Congress. The book thus begins with a short history of Democratic foreign policy under the Carter and Clinton administrations. The next few chapters detail the Obama primary/presidential campaigns and the rise of the "Obamians," the group of youngish advisers that were attracted to Obama by his personality but had much less foreign policy experience than the more senior, establishment Democrats that aligned with Hillary Clinton during the primary contest.

From here the book devotes chapters to various episodes in international affairs since 2008 and how the Obama administration managed them. Some of these chapters are a bit tedious and read like a simple rehash of newspaper accounts of global events. That being said, the chapters on China (chapter 13) and the assassination of Bin Laden (chapter 21) were captivating reading because the author perfectly blended factual occurrences with strategic planning. The book shines when Mann relies on information gleaned from an impressive array of interviews with insiders to give a behind-the-scenes image of how events looked from the White House. The tone is largely neutral except for repeated praise for Obama's "elegant" speeches (which get their own chapter) and some criticism of Obama's unwillingness to keep a campaign promise to abide by the War Powers Resolution.

All in all, this is a very good book that paints a portrait of a foreign policy team that is cautious, deliberative, fittingly hawkish, and very attuned to politics. It is not as scholarly or ideological analytic as some readers may hope, but its accessibility means a large audience can appreciate its historical approach. This book is bound to be as highly regarded as Mann's previous book, "Rise of the Vulcans," and I expect readers interested in foreign affairs will be grateful for Mann's most recent effort.

A thorough review of three years of foreign policy under the Obama administration, focusing on the conflict and interplay between the young and less experienced idealists that Obama brought in and the more experienced realists with whom they had to work in order to function.

This book is not pro-Obama or anti-Obama, but, rather, covers Obama's triumphs, most notably the killing of Osama bin Laden, and his failures, notably the decision not to support the Green movement in Iran and Obama's poor treatment of Richard Holbrooke.

Great Book No Big Changes

The biggest reason I love this book is because it is the same book as the later edition that I needed for school only difference is the chapter name changed a bit but same stuff. What was added was some examples (lack of a better word here) my instructor didn't use those. I really hate spending tons of money on books and I like keeping the ones solely related to my field like this one

Mind Opening

I waited some time for this book to be released, and though at first I was disappointed by the short length, nonetheless I enjoyed every page. If I could ask for anything it would be an experiment guide/walk through at the end of the book so I don't have to scroll searching for them. Thank you for the amazing words.
